Series 8 Summary
The eighth season of the US sitcom finds Marshall and Lily adjusting to parenthood and Ted offering advice to Robin on a stressful occasion.
Episode 1 - Farhampton
In a flash forward to Robin and Barney's future wedding day, Robin is suffering acute anxiety.
Ted tries to reassure her by telling her about the time when he and Victoria were about to run away together and he had to deliver a note of apology to Victoria's jilted fiancé Klaus.
Sleep deprivation means that new parents Lily and Marshall are struggling to focus on what's going on around them.
Meanwhile, Barney reveals that he hasn't been entirely honest with Quinn about his romantic history with Robin.
Episode 2 - The Pre-Nup
On the advice of a colleague, Barney puts together an extensive pre-nuptial agreement that lays out the rules for behaviour within marriage, as well as the terms for divorce.
Quinn is outraged, as are Victoria, Lily and Robin when Ted, Marshall and Nick side with Barney and each propose their own relationship amendments.
The war of the sexes escalates when Quinn draws up a comprehensive pre-nup of her own. Can the four couples resolve their conflicts?
Episode 3 - Nannies
Lily and Marshall struggle to find a good nanny within their budget for baby Marvin. The best candidate declines their offer of work because she's about to run off to Paris with a wealthy single father.
It turns out that the man in question is Barney, who is posing as a single dad to meet attractive young nannies. Could Lily's father Mickey step into the breach and take care of his grandson?
Meanwhile, Robin and Ted compete over who has the best new relationship.
Episode 4 - Who Wants to Be a Godparent?
When Lily and Marshall almost get hit by a car on their first day out since becoming parents, they decide to make a will and find a godparent and potential legal guardian for baby Marvin.
However, none of their family members are suitable contenders, so they hold a game show-style parenting skills contest between Barney, Robin and Ted to find the best candidate.
Episode 5 - The Autumn of Break-Ups
When Victoria drops hints to Ted about wanting more commitment in their relationship, he fails to notice and needs Lily and Marshall to explain the subtext to him. However, when Ted attempts to show his devotion to Victoria, she issues an ultimatum.
Barney becomes excessively fond of a dog that he finds in the street and, when the owner reclaims the lost hound, Robin grows concerned about her friend's mental state.
Episode 6 - Splitsville
Robin and Nick spend more time talking and less time having sex when Nick pulls his groin playing basketball.
Robin then realises that Nick is not very intelligent and decides to break up with him. When she loses her resolve at the last moment, Barney takes matters into his own hands to help her end the relationship.
Meanwhile, Lily and Marshall are desperate to kick-start their sex life, but the demands of parenthood get in the way.
Episode 7 - The Stamp Tramp
Marshall runs into his old law-school classmate Brad, who has fallen on hard times, and decides to help out by recommending him for a job at his firm.
However, when Brad's interview for the position goes badly wrong, Marshall has to undertake some serious damage limitation with his boss.
Robin helps negotiate a new strip-club membership for Barney after his ex-girlfriend Quinn goes back to work at the Lusty Leopard, leaving him unable to visit his favourite nightspot.
Episode 8 - Twelve Horny Women
Marshall takes on his old friend and new nemesis, Brad, in the biggest case of his career.
Meanwhile, the gang reminisce about their own run-ins with the law, leading to a debate over who was the biggest troublemaker as a teenager.
Episode 9 - Lobster Crawl
When Ted fills in as Marvin's nanny, Marshall and Lily realise he's using the baby as a surrogate for the real object of his devotion: the GNB building.
Meanwhile, Robin is determined to get Barney back, no matter how much effort it takes.
Episode 10 - The Over-Correction
Robin becomes increasingly suspicious of Barney's relationship with Patrice and, thinking that Barney is going through an emotional crisis, attempts to split them up.
Marshall and Lily are shocked when they discover Marshall's mother has started a new romantic chapter in her life with an unexpected partner.
Episode 11 - The Final Page Part 1
Ted invites his old university professor, who insisted he would never make it as an architect, to the grand opening of the GNB building.
When the professor snubs Ted by returning the invitation, saying he doesn't know who he is, Ted goes back to the campus to confront him.
He takes the gang along for old time's sake, but while there Lily and Marshall run into an old acquaintance they would rather avoid.
Episode 12 - The Final Page Part 2
Barney tells Ted that he plans to propose to Patrice and immediately swears him to secrecy.
This puts Ted in a difficult position, as he feels that he should tell Robin what's happening, so he asks her to be his date to the gala opening of the GNB building, intending to confide in her at the event.
Marshall and Lily have their first night away together since the birth of baby Marvin and are determined not to waste a minute of their special evening, but as time passes they become anxious about their son.
Episode 13 - Band or DJ?
When Robin learns that Barney failed to ask her father's permission before proposing, she insists that he gets Robin Sr's approval as soon as possible.
However, when she finds out that her father got married without telling her, she changes her opinion.
Meanwhile, Ted conceals his disappointment at his friends' engagement by throwing himself into planning their wedding.
Episode 14 - Ring Up!
Ted begins dating a 20-year-old woman with a wild social life, but soon realises that he has nothing in common with her.
Newly engaged and missing the old days of one-night stands, Barney begs Ted to continue with this mismatched relationship so that he can live vicariously through his friend.
Meanwhile, Robin is upset when she realises that wearing her new engagement ring makes her invisible to most young men.
Episode 15 - P.S. I Love You
Marshall and Lily worry that Ted's new girlfriend Jeanette is a deranged stalker, but Ted insists that their meeting is simply the result of destiny.
When Robin admits that she was dangerously obsessed with a mystery man when she was a teenager, Barney heads off to Canada to track him down.
Episode 16 - Bad Crazy
Ted is reluctant to break up with his crazy girlfriend Jeanette, despite the advice of his friends, who think her unpredictable behaviour is stressful.
However, things come to a head when Jeanette manages to gain access to Ted's flat and barricades herself into his bedroom.
Meanwhile, Robin is intimidated by the idea of holding baby Marvin because she is frightened that she will drop him. Mike Tyson guest stars.
Episode 17 - The Ashtray
When Ted receives an unexpected voicemail from his former love rival The Captain (guest star Kyle MacLachlan), the gang recall their last awkward encounter with him.
However, Lily is forced to point out that Ted and Robin's versions of events are both inaccurate, and she confesses to an act of petty theft that may have motivated The Captain to get in touch.
Episode 18 - Weekend at Barney's
When Ted and Jeanette break up, Barney tries to help his friend find a new date using his infamous playbook full of foolproof ways to chat up women.
However, Robin is furious when she discovers that Barney didn't destroy his playbook, as he'd claimed.
Marshall accidentally draws attention to himself at an art gallery opening at which Lily hopes to make a good impression.
Episode 19 - The Fortress
As their wedding day rapidly approaches, Robin tells Barney that she wants to begin their married life in a new home as she doesn't want to stay in the flat where so many of his previous sexual encounters took place.
However, Barney is reluctant to sell his home and soon starts to drive away prospective buyers.
Lily's demanding new job working as an art consultant for The Captain takes its toll on her relationship with Marshall.

Marshall challenges Robin to a dance-off when they fall out over who should take the credit for the invention of a new cocktail at McLaren's bar.
Episode 21 - Romeward Bound
The Captain asks Lily to move to Rome for a year so that she can continue to act as his art consultant while he lives there.
Lily worries that if she accepts the offer Marshall will feel resentful towards her for interrupting his career, but she is unaware that her husband's professional circumstances have changed.
Ted and Barney's attention is captured by a young woman whose attractive figure is hidden by a voluminous coat. Can they persuade her to remove the garment without arousing suspicion or causing offence?
Episode 22 - The Bro-Mitzvah
Ted and Marshall are determined to arrange a stellar stag night for Barney, so they kidnap him and take him to a secret party location.
Unfortunately, the entertainment laid on for the event proves disappointing, and Barney gets a real shock when the stripper arrives.
