Series 6 Summary
Ted and Barney are still arguing over girls, Robin is heartbroken over Don, and Marshall can't keep quiet about his desire to start a family. Lies come to the surface as Barney learns that that the true identity of his father has been hidden by his mother. Barney tries to trade his womanising advice for more constructive projects with Ted, and Robin sets out to prove that she is a 'real' New Yorker.
Episode 1 - Big Days
Ted and Barney argue about who has "dibs" on asking out a beautiful woman.
Ted realises that the girl in question is out with Cindy (a girl he previously dated, who is also the roommate of his future wife).
Meanwhile, Robin is heartbroken over Don and Marshall can't keep quiet about his desire to start a family.
Episode 2 - Cleaning
When Barney convinces the gang to help his mum move houses, they quickly learn that she has been very protective towards Barney and has told white lies about events throughout his life, including his father's true identity.
Elsewhere, Ted gets upset when Robin oversells him to a blind date.
Episode 3 - Unfinished
When Ted declines Barney's offer to design the new GNB building, Barney ties to woo him by using his best womanising tactics.
Meanwhile, Robin drunk-dials Don in a desperate attempt to win him back.
Episode 4 - Subway Wars
The gang race each other using different methods of transport to get to a restaurant where Woody Allen has been spotted. Who will arrive first?
Episode 5 - Architect of Destruction
Ted is in a quandary after meeting activist Zoey who wants to save a landmark building due be torn down and replaced by the new GNB building. A building that, unbeknownst to Zoey, Ted is designing.
Episode 6 - Baby Talk
Lily and Marshall visit their friends Claudia and Stuart, who have just had a baby, only to discover that the couple can't agree on a name.
Prompted by this, Marshall and Lily to discuss potential baby names and soon realise they can't agree on a name either.
Marshall confides in Ted that he worries about having a daughter, and Robin has issues with her new colleague Becky who speaks like an eight-year-old girl.
Episode 7 - Canning Randy
Marshall is guilt-ridden after firing his incompetent assistant. Zoey enrolls in Ted's class, and manipulates his students into taking her side in the fight to save the Arcadian building from being torn down by GNB.
Episode 8 - Natural History
When the gang attends a black-tie fundraiser at the Natural History Museum, Ted runs into Zoey and sees a whole different side to her when she introduces him to her husband, the Captain.
Later, Marshall and Lily argue over his career path and Barney makes a shocking discovery.
Episode 9 - Glitter
Lily can't stop talking about babies and it's putting a strain on her relationship with Robin.
Barney finds a copy of the Canadian children's programme Space Teens starring Robin's alter-ego 'Robin Sparkles'.
When Lily finds out that co-star Jessica Glitter was Robin's best friend until they had a falling out, she decides to find out what went wrong.
Episode 10 - Blitzgiving
Ted leaves a night out early because he's preparing a Thanksgiving feast the following day.
When Ted wakes up the next day, the rest of the gang - and Zoey, who they've now befriended - are at his flat and boasting about the incredible night they had.
But when a broken oven forces them to take up Zoey's offer of Thanksgiving at her house, it isn't long before Ted and she are back at loggerheads.
Episode 11 - The Mermaid Theory
When Ted's friendship with Zoey begins to make her husband jealous, Lily suggests that he befriend him too.
Marshall and Robin spend some one-on-one time together and end up testing Barney's Mermaid Theory.
Episode 12 - False Positive
Marshall and Lily have a positive result on a pregnancy test; Robin chooses between two very different jobs; and Barney is in a pickle over a diamond suit.
Episode 13 - Bad News
Marshall and Lily worry that they will never conceive a child. To allay their fears, the couple visit a specialist who bears an uncanny resemblance to Barney.
Robin starts her new job and is horrified to learn that her new boss is an arch rival former colleague.
Episode 14 - Last Words
The gang travel to Minnesota for the funeral of Marshall's father, and they each try to ease the situation as much as possible.
Lily supports Marshall's mum but ends up aggravating her, and Marshall is upset when he remembers that, in their last conversation, his dad encouraged him to watch Crocodile Dundee III.
Episode 15 - Oh, Honey
Zoey sets Ted up on a date with her naive cousin.
Ted realises that he loves Zoey but tries to push her away so that he doesn't cause trouble in her relationship. Meanwhile, Marshall takes up some of his old habits.
Episode 16 - Desperation Day
Barney renames February 13 'Desperation Day', and brands it as a holiday for women with low self-esteem because they are destined to be alone on Valentine's Day.
Lily surprises Marshall (who is still in Minnesota) for Valentine's Day, Ted and Zoey continue to figure out their relationship and Robin bonds with her single friends.
Episode 17 - Garbage Island
After Marshall sees a documentary about an island in the Pacific used as a landfill, he becomes determined to save the environment.
Ted has an uncomfortable encounter with Zoey's ex-husband - the Captain - who doesn't realise that Ted and Zoey are now together. Meanwhile, Robin forces Barney to admit he has feelings for her friend Nora.
Episode 18 - A Change of Heart
The friends have health checks in wake of Marshall's dad's fatal heart attack.
Barney denies that he has feelings for Nora and Robin dates a man called Scooby who reminds the gang of a dog.
Episode 19 - Legendaddy
Barney's dad, Jerome, shows up at his home. After learning his father is a driving instructor in the suburbs, Barney decides he's not the cool dad he'd hoped for and wants nothing more to do with him.
The gang convinces Barney to give Jerome another chance and take up his offer to have dinner with his wife and son. But when he does, Barney finds that he is more upset by Jerome's traditional but happy family life than he expected.
Episode 20 - The Exploding Meatball Sub
Ted and Barney argue Marshall's decision to quit his job at Goliath National Bank and take a volunteer position at an environmental organisation ends up affecting everyone in the group.
Zoey and Ted come to a deadlock over their differing views on the future of the Arcadian.
Episode 21 - Hopeless
Barney is determined to show his dad that it was a mistake to have given up his former life of wild partying, drinking and sleeping around.
Episode 22 - The Perfect Cocktail
Marshall and Barney are at odds with each other over the destruction of the Arcadian Hotel, so Robin and Lily try to create a super cocktail that will force them to make up.
Meanwhile, in an attempt to avoid arguing about the fate of the Arcadian, Ted plans a romantic weekend away with Zoey.
Episode 23 - Landmarks
The Landmark Preservation Council is meeting to decide the fate of the Arcadian and Ted has been called in as a witness during the proceedings.
He's torn between wanting to design a new building for GNB and wanting to keep his relationship with Zoey. When Barney's job is also on the line, Robin makes her opinion known.
Episode 24 - Challenge Accepted
Robin and Barney bond as they try to prevent Ted from getting back together with Zoey.
Barney runs into Nora and asks her to go out on a date with him. Marshall and Lily get food poisoning, and Ted serves as best man at a very important wedding.
