Series 5 Summary
In series five, Barney turns to Ted for advice on how to Robin. But when Barney suddenly starts to be more thoughtful and considerate, Robin naturally assumes he's cheating on her. Things aren't going much better for Ted. While on a blind date, he realises this is the same girl he went on a date with seven years earlier. They still have nothing in common and he is still cracking the same appalling jokes. Things have just got to change...
Episode 1 - Definitions
Robin and Barney are puzzled as to how they should act around each other now they've confessed their true feelings. They decide to tell their friends that they're not in a relationship but continue to date on the sly.
Things are going well until Ted, Marshall and Lily find out. Lily is desperate for them to define their relationship and locks Barney and Robin into Robin's bedroom until they decide if they're boyfriend and girlfriend or just friends. Meanwhile, Ted's first day as a lecturer at Columbia doesn't go to plan.
Episode 2 - Double Date
Ted goes on a date with Jen. The both realise that they went on a date seven years ago and carry on with their present date in order to determine what went wrong first time around. Barney takes Marshall to a strip club where they find a stripper who looks like Lily.
Episode 3 - Robin 101
Robin and Barney make their relationship official but Barney is finding it hard to adjust from being a bachelor to being Robin's boyfriend.
Robin worries whether Barney is capable of being in a relationship. Ted overhears and tells Barney. Will Barney try harder to make things work with Robin?
Episode 4 - The Sexless Innkeeper
Marshall and Lily are eager to go on a double date with Robyn and Barney, as they've previously found it difficult to find couples to spend time with, and invite them over to their flat for a games night.
Will Marshall and Lily's overbearing manner push Barney and Robyn apart? Meanwhile, Ted boasts to his friends about his apparent upswing in success with women but Robyn and Barney point out that the women are only flirting with Ted so they have a convenient place to stay after a night at the bar.
Episode 5 - Dual Citizenship
Marshall and Ted take a road trip to Chicago for a nostalgic bachelor's adventrue. Unfortunately for Ted, Marshall has asked Lily along and consequently, their plans change.
Robin faces deportation when she breaks an American's nose. With the help of Barney, she swots up for a citizenship test but on the day of the test, realises she doesn't want to be a fully fledged American. Can she stay in the country?
Episode 6 - Bagpipes
Barney misinterprets Marshall and Lily's household chore divide and mistakenly thinks they're heading for divorce. Barney offers Marshall relationship advice.
Meanwhile, Robin and Barney seem to be blissfully happy but Ted sees underneath the show and unearths some truths from the couple. Are they as happy as they appear to be and will they stay together?
Episode 7 - The Rough Patch
Ted, Lily and Marshall try to break Barney and Robin up when they fall into a relationship rut and become unlike their former selves.
Episode 8 - The Playbook
Barney reverts back to his bachelor ways when he and Robin break up and is soon on the prowl for new women to date. Lily objects to his behaviour and tries to teach him a lesson.
Episode 9 - Slapsgiving 2: Revenge of the Slap
Lily's long lost dad shows up unannounced Thanksgiving. She confides the real reason why she stopped speaking to him three years ago but she and Marshall disagree on how they should deal with family disputes. Will Lily take Marshall's advice and forgive her dad?
Episode 10 - The Window
Ted's friends try to help him woo his perfect woman from his college days but Barney and Robin spoil his big chance. Will he still get his girl?
Marshall reads a letter that he wrote as a teenager with a list of things that he wants to achieve as an adult. Marshall tries to rectify his life choices but is overwhelmingly disappointed in the career he's chosen. Can Lily make him see the good in his working life?
Episode 11 - Last Cigarette Ever
Robin is excited to hear that she'll be working with legendary newsman Don Frank but is soon disappointed to find out that he isn't as professional as she thought he'd be.
Elsewhere, the friends reveal that they are all former smokers and all become addicted to cigarettes again.
Episode 12 - Girls Vs Suits
Ted meets a PHD student Cindy (guest star Rachel Bilson) who, he tells his children when he's looking back on the time, shares a room with his future wife.
Meanwhile, Barney tries to chat up a new barmaid who hates men who wear suits.
Episode 13 - Jenkins
Marshall tells Ted a series of anecdotes about his colleague Jenkins and Ted is surprised to discover that Jenkins is a woman.
Lily isn't as jealous as Marshall expects her to be but later changes her mind when Jenkins tries to kiss Marshall. Will Marshall reciprocate Jenkins' feelings?
Episode 14 - The Perfect Week
Barney reaches a milestone, Lily and Marshall realise they've been using the same toothbrush, Robin has an anxious wait and Ted insults a student.
Episode 15 - Rabbit Or Duck
Barney holds his phone number up during the Superbowl and is inundated with phone calls from women.
Meanwhile, Lily and Marshall set up a blind date for Ted for Valentine's Day and Robin and Ted get an unwanted surprise from Don.
Episode 16 - Hooked
Ted is 'hooked' on Tiffany meaning - according to his friends - that he is being strung along and he is humiliated when he sees Tiffany on another date on the evening they'd planned to go out.
Meanwhile, Lily and Marshall try to let down one of her colleagues gently.
Episode 17 - Of Course
Robin sets up Barney on a date with self-help author Anita (Jennifer Lopez). Barney asks Ted's advice on dating, but his tips end up offending Robin.
Episode 18 - Say Cheese
Lily is annoyed with Ted for inviting his new girlfriend, Amanda, to her birthday dinner. It's not the first time he's come with a stranger... and she shows him her photo albums to prove it.
Episode 19 - Zoo or False
Marshall gets mugged at gunpoint.
Lily applies for a gun licence in the hope that it will make them both feel safer, but Marshall objects.
Robin interviews Marshall about the incident for the news.
Episode 20 - Home Wreckers
Ted is upset when his mum marries her long-term partner and walks out of the wedding refusing to give a speech.
Later, morose and disappointed that he isn't married with children, he buys a dilapidated house on a whim. But, will his friends' reactions convince him to get rid of his new residence?
Episode 21 - Twin Beds
After Don asks Robin to move in with him, she decides it's time for Ted and Barney to meet him.
Ted and Barney react badly when they realise Robin has moved on - and both try to win Robin back. Is she still interested in either of them?
In the meantime, Lily and Marshall start sleeping in separate beds.
Episode 22 - Robots Versus Wrestlers
Ted wonders whether he should start hanging out with a new crowd after going to a high-society architectural party.
Elsewhere, Lily and Marshall discuss having children, and Barney worries that the gang is drifting apart.
Episode 23 - The Wedding Bride
Ted takes a date to see new hit film The Wedding Bride.
After recognising that its plot is eerily similar to his relationship with Stella, he discovers that her fiancé Tony wrote the screenplay.
Episode 24 - Doppelgängers
Marshall and Lily make a secret pact to start trying for a baby if they see Barney's doppelgänger; he's the only member of the gang not to have a double. But, Lily realises she still has doubts about becoming a parent.
Robin is offered a dream job, which comes at a cost - it's in Chicago.
