Hello Adam! Can you fill us in on what’s going on with Kyle at the moment?

Basically, Kyle has fallen on hard times because Darren nicked his last bag of weed, so he has been living in his car. Luckily though, Nancy and Darren have taken him in but whilst he’s living with the two of them, he sees Nancy reach a real low point and Darren begs Kyle to help him deal drugs to help with Nancy’s treatment. I think Kyle is a bit reluctant but he sees how much pain Darren is in, so he decides to help him out. They quickly start going a bit hard-core though and the knock-on effect is that Kyle’s around the village a lot more, which Ryan obviously does not like because he’s worried the secret about them sleeping together will come out. So in order to shut Kyle up, Ryan gets Kyle locked up for drug dealing. It’s basically, a nightmare situation for Kyle.

Why is Kyle so keen to build a relationship with Ryan?

When Kyle was younger he was always the life and soul of a party and a ladies man, but then he got diagnosed with MS. He paints on this picture of this happy, outgoing guy but really deep down he’s quite vulnerable. I think he’s now latching onto things because he thinks it’s a safe option. Ryan is the first guy he’s been sure of and is the first guy he genuinely feels more than a friendship with. I also think he knows Ryan is in a dark place, so he wants to be there for him and help him.

We also saw Kyle confess all to Mercedes, why does he decide to do that?

Well, basically, because Ryan does him over and sends him to prison! In the build up to Kyle getting arrested, Kyle is threatening Ryan to come out because Kyle can see how unhappy Ryan is; he’s not being honest with himself. I think Kyle’s view is that if he gives Ryan a push maybe he will come out and tell Mercedes the truth.

What’s it like working alongside Duncan James?

It’s been funny - I’ve known Duncan for years. When I first got the part and they mentioned that Kyle would be gay, I was like, “Oh, that’s fine as long as it’s not with Duncan...” because he was such a good mate. They were like, “Erm… well it is with Duncan”. [laughs] In some respect, you think it’s going to be really awkward because I’d known him for so long, but then at the same time it was really good because he’s such a nice guy and we are good mates! So, my first ever boy-on-boy kiss was with Duncan from Blue! That’s definitely a benchmark! [laughs]

As well as this, Kyle has also been arrested for supplying drugs, how do you think he’ll cope in prison?

The thing with Kyle is that he’s very vulnerable because of his MS – it makes him very fragile. But he actually has a tough outer skin, so I don’t think going to prison is the problem for him because he’s very streetwise. I think what’s in danger of breaking him is the fact Ryan has orchestrated it all.

Does Kyle have any idea that Darren knew Ryan was setting him up?

I don’t think he does, no. Maybe later on down the line that will become clear! In some respect, I hope it does because out of all the relationships Kyle has on the show, I actually think the most interesting one is the one with Darren. They have the capacity to be such good friends and be there for one another. I am hoping he never does find out, but being soapland I am sure he will at some point.

What’s it been like working at Hollyoaks so far?

It’s been awesome! I have had so many friends work on it for years, including my brother who worked in the crew, and every single person has said the relationship between the crew and the cast is seamless. You kind of hear that, but until you work here you don’t realise it actually is! It is such a vibrant place to work and there’s no separation. I have also got to say, when you watch the stuff that goes out, it is incredible; I mean visually, it’s so beautiful.

Have you got any funny stories or memories that stick out?

I’ve got to say, probably the whole snogging scene with Duncan! It was something I was so nervous about, but actually when we got there, Duncan was more nervous than me. It was so funny though in the end, it was like kissing your own brother, which was weird! [laughs] Another one is when Ashley Taylor Dawson arrived on a scene and changed the whole thing around! It’s the whole creative side of things that I love, nothing is completely set in stone, there’s an ability for everyone to work together to make it the best it can be.

What’s it like working alongside the Osborne family?

I’ve got to say, it’s been some of the most fun I have ever had in my life. Working with Jess and Ashley – don’t ever tell them- but they’re just the two best eggs in the world! There is such a slick machine between the two of them, but they also know how to enjoy themselves on set, as well as producing the best performance. I know they are kind of royalty on the show, and all I can say is they deserve to be!
