Series 1
Series Summary
Any child can have bouts of bad behaviour or mood swings. But one in five children in the UK suffer from psychological problems, and up to half of those have the kind of serious mental illnesses normally associated with adults. The results can devastate the lives of the children and their families, but treatments now offer the chance for many to be cured, often without the use of mood-altering drugs.
This moving series follows children with illnesses ranging from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) to anorexia, as they receive intensive, and often emotionally-draining, treatment at the Children's Unit of the Maudsley Hospital in London, where new approaches have been pioneered in the UK. The experts, led by Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr Isobel Heyman, help the children to face their deepest fears. The results can be astonishing, with 80% of the children leaving well on the way to recovery.
