Hedwig (John Cameron Mitchell) was born in the GDR and wanted to be a woman from an early age.
Promise of marriage to a US army serviceman, providing he had a sex change operation, promised a way out, but one botched operation later, leaving the 'angry inch', Hedwig is dumped alone in America.
She forms a band with Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt), but Gnosis quits, stealing Hedwig's material and going on to stadium-filling fame, while a bitter Hedwig is reduced to supper club gigs, shadowing Tommy's tour with a set of songs that tell the story of her life.
Hedwig's songs provide the backbone of Mitchell's quirky and glitzy film, telling her tale in flashback.
