'The idea for the series came from when I was working on The Cops which was the first thing that brought me up to Manchester. After three series of The Cops the idea came to something glossy and glamorous as a complete contrast to that. Somebody suggested Cheshire, but I had never been there.
That was a few years ago now, and I subsequently got some money to develop it further. I had the number for Margaret Blakemore who was an actress in The Cops but who by then was also working as a gossip columnist for Cheshire Life magazine.
Margaret took me to all these openings, introduced me to millionaires, showed me people’s houses and took me to various events. She gave me a complete entrée to this kind of world and I’d also always had a fascination with builders and how they made their money. And it was the combination of those two things was the start of Goldplated as we now know it.
The affluence in the series was the flipside to the world of The Cops but in a similar way the series is a Trojan horse to get across ideas about that world and the people who inhabit it. I wanted to write something about the winners of Thatcher’s Britain - obviously the financial winners, not the moral winners.
I hope that as you watch the series the characters will grow on you and you get involved with them even if you didn’t like them originally.'
