Scraper Bikes are a US West Coast craze – in the same way as car owners can ‘pimp their ride’, Scraperbiking is essentially all about pimping your bike. It involves tricking out ordinary bicycle spokes with candy-coloured pinwheels and matching body/wheel colours, using tinfoil, re-used cardboard, candy wrappers and paint.

The popularity of the craze is an enduring monument to the way cool ideas spread infinitely quicker online. Although it started in the USA, as part of an anti-gang initiative by a fantastic guy called Baby F. Champ, one 3 million hit YouTube video later, it’s now spread all over the world – there are scraper bikers as far afield as Russia, Germany and South Africa. It’s caught on pretty much everywhere there are kids, bikes and a connection to the internet.
