Everyone has seen it, but it remains something of a mystery despite the research that has been undertaken in the past.
This programme charts the new wave of experiments and investigations into one of nature's most capricious, awesome and terrifying forces: lightening. It looks at 'ball' lightening, 'ribbon' lightening - the strange red 'sprites' which shoot up to 150km from the top of thunderstorms - and even attempts to create lightening by firing rockets into storm clouds.
Equinox meets the people whose lives lightning touches directly - both intentionally and unintentionally. The programme features stunning, specially commissioned time-lapse footage of lightning from world-renowned cameraman Simon Carroll.
