Eleven-year-old Clare O'Brien dreams of leaving the confines of her family home, a grocer's shop where there is no room or time for dreamers, only hard work and getting by.

Meanwhile her contemporary David Power lives a comfortable existence away from the village community, while Clare's teacher Angela helps her towards a secondary school scholarship.
