Nick Broomfield was originally commissioned to make a real-life Fame, recording on film the progress, from casting to Munich opening, of impressario Andre Heller's all black stage musical, Body and Soul.
However, the shooting schedule turns into a living nightmare and comes to resemble Mel Brook's The Producers. Broomfield has his budget cut by 80% and falls out with the writer brought in by the producer to add 'plot' to the documentary; one of the three choreographers threatens suicide, another is struck on the head by a camera and the third physically assualts the crew. And that's before the cast revolts and the investors theaten to pull out...
