Mum, Dad, Alzheimer's and Me: YouGov Survey
A YouGov survey featured in Dispatches: Mum, Dad, Alzheimer's and Me (January 2009) reveals that less than half of carers of Alzheimer's sufferers (49%) say they receive any help at all from social services.
The poll of 767 carers also shows that forty one per cent of those surveyed say they rarely or never receive respite care and two thirds would like training in caring for an Alzheimer's sufferer.
The survey also highlights the difficulty many Alzheimer's sufferers face in obtaining a diagnosis - carers said that 27% of the sufferers they looked after waited 3 or more years for a diagnosis while seventeen per cent had never received an official diagnosis. And it finds that 20% of carers sometimes or often feel threatened by the sufferers they care for.
