The narrative picks up where the first film left off, with Victor Mature as Demetrius, the former Roman slave who has converted to Christianity and is now the guardian of the garment that Christ wore in his way to the Cross.
But Emperor Caligula (Jay Robinson) also wants the robe in order to exploit the inherent magical powers he believes it possesses.
When Demetrius refuses to reveal its location, the pacifist is arrested and sentenced to gladiatorial combat. However, a traumatic incident involving his beloved Lucia (Debra Paget) will see him renounce his faith, take up the sword to fight in the ring, and, seemingly, side with the emperor...
Also starring Susan Hayward as the duplicitous and sexually liberated Messalina who seeks to seduce Demetrius; Barry Jones as Claudius, Messalina's husband and the future emperor; and Michael Rennie as Peter the Apostle.
