Series 1 Episode 3
First Broadcast: 10PM Thu 5 April 2012

Joseph Garcia's case is one of a tragic outcome from an everyday event, and a punishment out of proportion.

He was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of a young man. Drunk and jealous of the attention his ex-girlfriend was paying to Garcia, Garcia's victim started a fight, which ended with Garcia fatally stabbing him.

Garcia subsequently participated in a prison break masterminded by George Rivas. Rivas had received 18 consecutive life sentences for robberies during which he locked away employees of stores without ever harming anyone.

When the seven escapees robbed a gun store on Christmas Eve, Rivas fatally shot a police officer, and all seven received the death penalty.

Rivas also received another 17 life sentences for taking prison guards hostage during the escape, plus 99 years for taking a car.

Rivas was executed in February 2012; Garcia sees own his execution as inevitable and irreversible.
