Dawn visits remote Arizona to try to gain access to an extraordinary town where all the families live a polygamous lifestyle. Dawn moves in with a prosperous family of three wives and some 20 children, witnessing first-hand some of the positives and negatives of this unusual arrangement.

Then Dawn gets a husband's point of view, meeting a man living in the desert with his two wives and children as he seeks wife number three. Talking to the women and children in this modest setting, Dawn discovers the sacrifices people make for this uncoventional way of life.

'The minus side is jealousy,' says Dawn at the end of her trip. 'But there is a plus side too, a growing sense of companionship and mutual help - especially when times get tough.'

  1. Hi, I'm a teacher and some of the stuff on demand would be really useful but I missed it first time round. Is there a way to buy/record the material for viewing at a later date?

  2. i've just watched dawn porter: polygamist's wife, and i'm shocked on how rude dawn porter is, she talks about the families as if she is documenting animals.

  4. Can I just make it clear that in this programme they are using 'Mormon' in the widest context possible. As people know there are several churches out there which claim to be Mormon but who are not members of 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' who are most commonly called Mormons and are misjudged because of programmes which don't make it clear. I believe but could be wrong that these people are part of the 'The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' which offically spilt from 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' in 1932, no member of the LDS Church can practice polgamy without getting excommunicated. I'm not judging them and I refuse to judge them I just wanted to point out the differences. Its a shame really that this wasn't pointed out within the programme but never mind!
