One of Hindi cinema's biggest hits, Abhinav Kashyap's directorial debut, Dabangg (The Fearless One), is a high-voltage tongue-in-cheek crime caper that combines violent action, romance, family intrigues and satirical comment on political corruption and power.
It tells the story of Chulbul Pandey (the ever-popular Salman Khan), an Uttar Pradesh cop who calls himself Robin Hood Pandey. He's forever at loggerheads with his stepbrother Makhi (played by Khan's real life brother, actor/producer Arbaaz Khan),
Chulbul delights in flexing his muscles, picking fights and causing mayhem. And, instead of arresting violent thieves, Chulbul happily robs the robbers, keeping the money locked up in his mother's safe.
Audiences loved Dileep Shukla and Abhinav Kashyap's cheeky, colloquial script, with its smart Hindi dialogue. And the old-fashioned Bollywood hero Chulbul Pandey won the hearts of millions of fans, assuring Salman Khan's place in Indian cinema history.
A highlight of the movie is Farah Khan's choreography for the song Munni badnaam hui (Munni's Name Is Mud), performed by the sexy Malaika Arora.
Also starring Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Anupam Kher, Om Puri and Mahie Gill.
In Hindi with English subtitles.
