Countdown presenters Jeff and Rachel

Friday 06 March 2009

Helen Warner, C4 Head of Daytime

Well, what a huge reaction we've had to the relaunch of Countdown! We know how much the show means to its viewers, but we've been blown away by the massive response from you all.

Des and Carol were always going to be a very hard act to follow, but we think Jeff and Rachel are settling-in brilliantly. Jeff has a natural warmth, coupled with a fierce intelligence, which seems to fit perfectly with Countdown- and he has brought with him an army of fans from his Soccer Saturday show on Sky. After every recording, the long queue of audience members requesting his autograph is testament to how popular he is. Some viewers have complained that he talks about sport too much, so Jeff is trying very hard to limit his footie references!

Rachel is going from strength to strength, and we are delighted to have found such an incredible talent. Despite never having set foot in a TV studio before, she has lost her early nerves and is now solving the most incredible sums with ease. She really is a maths genius - and the proportion of men watching the show has noticeably increased... We're not sure if this is down to Jeff or Rachel!

Rachel's high heels attracted a great deal of interest at the beginning, with many viewers commenting that they adversely affected her posture. The truth is that Rachel only saw herself on TV for the first time after having recorded six weeks of shows. Having seen herself, she swapped the sky-high heels for some lower ones and her posture has definitely improved as a result.

The biggest complaint by far has been that we don't put the words up on the board enough. Again, by the time we realised how important this was to viewers, we had recorded several weeks' worth of shows. But we have now addressed the issue, and I hope those of you who rang us to ask that we start putting them up again will feel that we have listened to your views and taken action.

Overall, the response to the relaunch has been tremendously positive, with viewers particularly enjoying the fact that the game itself has now taken centre stage. Some viewers still miss Des' showbiz stories and Carol's glamour and charisma - which is completely understandable as they are both great TV talents - but we hope that viewers will agree that having new presenters is a better option than losing the show altogether.

Countdown is now in its 27th year and we are so pleased to have it on Channel 4. Now that things are settling down again after such a tumultuous year, we can look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

On behalf of the Countdown team, I'd like to say thank you to everyone who has contacted us to share their thoughts. If you have anything more you like to say, please visit The TV Show blog, where you can leave your comments.

  1. Please could Carol's replacement Rachel?) be given voice lessons - it would improve the programme no end - used to love it, but find her so irritating - not her fault, just needs better modulation - less shouting and use of more range without forcing it!

  2. I just want to say that Rachel is an absolute star, unbelievably beautiful with brains to match and a smile that could light up wembley stadium.I stopped watching countdown when Des & Carol were presenting but Rachel(& Jeff) has made the show worth watching again.

  3. One final issue for Rachel to sort out (With the aid of Suzie). Please stop 'Timesing' one number by another. You don't times 9 by 3, you multiply 9 by 3. Contestants even say 'Multiply 9 by 3, but it's then repeated by Rachel saying 'Times 9 by 3'. It just sounds so juvenile, and not befitting a Maths Graduate. PLEASE stop this annoyance for me, and I'm sure, many others. By the way, leave Rachel's dresses as they are, with Winter coming on she'll brighten many a dull day. Brian from Hull.

  4. On today's show, why did you let Leslie sing?. It was aweful and I had to hit the mute button until she finished. What a racket. We should have been warned that noise was coming.

  5. I wish that Rachel would write her arithmetic correctly. When she writes 3x4=12 it is fine but when she then adds 10 (3x4=12+10) the statement is incorrect, as 3x4 is not equal to 12+10. I am sure that Rachel knows this. Will she please revert to Carol's method of writing the 10 on the next line, with a + sign alongside it, so that every = sign is in the middle of a true statement.

  6. Thanks to the countdown team, our 2 & a half little boy has learnt his alphabet, he started off putting square lego bricks in a row on a board muttering something & it's only when he started saying the letters as Rachel puts them up that we realised what he was doing with the lego bricks some months ago so a big thankyou to everyone concerned for giving him a headstart on his letters when he goes to school. We're hoping he now concentrates on saying the numbers. Again a big thankyou to all

  7. Jeff Stelling, Rachel Riley, Suzie Dent, Celebrity Guest, two contestants and audience. Was that enough? Not until I received my mention on the 30th September 2009 programme. Now, as Mother-in-Law used to say for Coronation Street, I will never miss 'my' programme - Countdown. Keep smiling

  9. I don't always manage to see countdown but have really liked rachel, but why are you trying to turn her into a carol vorderman clone. At the start her dress code was exactly right as she has natural beauty but now the length of her skirts are far too short and they are too tight to be nice. They just make her bum look big and i am sure it is far from that.

  10. After watching Countdown today I was surprised that the word "bereaving" was not allowed as the answer to the conundrum but only beavering was accepted. Surely if there happens to be another word which can be formed this should also be acceptable.

  11. Sorry, but I just want Rachel to do well. In my humble opinion, her red dress was not to increase the number of viewers. The reason for the red dress, I believe, was simply because it was a terrific choice of dress for Rachel. Rachel is very attractive, in my eyes, but she is a great help to Jeff. Also, she is, often, extremely patient with the contestants. Not only that, but she keeps Jeff Stelling young! Keep smiling

  12. My complaint is about the obvious dress of Rachel Riley. This has been very sexist and pathetic attempt to boost the ratings of the show. She was dressed as if going for a night on the town. Come on Ch 4. What is this all about? Aimed particularly for men viewers. I am offended at this! She is a very pretty girl, I can see that, but just because of your failing ratings, do we have to succumb to this? Really!

  17. I would like to see more of the game and the contestants and less of the guests because they are in danger of taking over the show. I would also like to ask Jeff to fix the whistle that comes from his teeth. It's most annoying.

  20. I felt sorry for Rachael today with the article in The Mail. I would like to commend her on her professionalism, what a clever girl, equal to Carole when she started. Only the odd numbers game she misses, Carole also missed some. I also like Jeff, much better than Des, I didn't like him, too full of himself. My husband and I sit down with a cup of tea and watch Countdown every day as we have done for many years. Give Rachael my best, she is a breath of fresh air and what a brain. ignore the nasty comments.

  21. I have read the article in today's Daily Mail magazine. Tell Rachel that she is brilliant at numbers, much better than Carol. She and Jeff have improved immensely since the first recording and she has nothing to worry about. Her presentation is good as is her humour. Take no notice of the rubbish people put on Utube

  25. I live in Spain and love to watch Countdown, it keeps my brain active and I love the new format with Rachel & Jeff. I have been watching it for about 20 years and when I was working would tape it and watch it at night. I see now that it will be back on screen on the 24th August but it would have been good if you could have let us know it was going off for a few weeks.

  39. I have stopped watching Countdown. The reasons are there on the comments page. 'Jeff is very good but he would be less irritating if he curbs his obsession with the little maths mama and moderate his testosterone.' 'Talks to Rachel like a love-sick schoolboy'. Come on, Jeff, you can do better than that. After all, you're old enough to be her grandfather. Rachel's high pitched voice is unpleasantly piercing. I haven't seen her posture post-high heels, but it was noticeably poor. Further, not enough words were being put on the board. And why have they stopped asking the audience to solve the conundrum if it remains unsolved by the contestants? How long will it be before Suzie Dent (who is irreplaceable) is replaced by a younger person?

  41. My father watched Countdown right until his death at 91. Being deaf and nearly blind at the end he sat within an inch of the screen... Now I am an addict! I suspect and I am hoping it is an elixir for longevity. I also suspect Rachel will be there for a very long time...she has rapidly become a national heartthrob. And OK, Jeff is very good but he would be less irritating if he curbs his obsession with the little maths mama and moderate his testosterone. During this unnecessary hiatus can someone give me useful links where I can practice numbers and letters.

  49. I must have missed the info on-air about Countdown being closed for a while. Looked through the internet site but could find no mention of this. Surely one of the functions of your site would be to keep us up to date regarding cancelling programmes It's quite hard work navigating the site - not much help from the index. There doesn't seem to be a "Contact Us" section and there is no response to the viewers comments. It's not satisfactory - you can see the questions but nobody in your team provides any responses.

She has proved time and again how wonderful she is with numbers. Rachel also has very good personality to match. Susie Dent is in a class of her own - so good with letters. 61. I was going to suggest Rachel change her wardrobe team, but yesterday and today she looks lovely. Those high-waisted swinging skirts look too small and don't do a thing for her. I think she has settled in well, and is a great improvement on Carol, but I haven't warmed to Jeff. He looks very false and talks to Rachel like a lovesick schoolboy. Sorry Jeff. Suzy of course adds the class to the show, and it would be a poorer show without her. I do enjoy countdown, and I know Richard was a hard act to follow, but it's getting there.

  64. I find Rachel's voice extremely nausiating. She tends to heighten the pitch of her voice as if trying to sound jovial and it goes straight through me. It is as if she is trying to over pronounce the words to compensate from previous difficulties with her pronunciation!Very bland, doesn't seem to have much personality or opinion.

  65. Like a lot of countdown enthusiasts I join in the game but letters such as s, t, p, m,n, c, b, f, are not distinct when called by Rachel (however she is much better than Carol was!). If your head is down writing the letters it is so annoying to have to check the board. Could not a phoenetic alphabet be used with these difficult sounding letters eg p for percy or t for tommy?

  66. I agree with the comments on Rachel's high heels affecting her posture, she looked so uncomfortable. However, I must comment on how much better she looks in slightly looser clothing. She is very attractive girl with a wonderful figure, but skin-tight dresses make even her posterior (for want of a better word) look large. She should avoid the sultry siren look - she doesn't need it.

  71. I enjoy the show with its new presenters but have a couple of comments. Please ask Rachel to vary her choice of numbers more. She picks 4 or 5 from the bottom row far too often. As a retired maths teacher I would also like to see her writing m aths statements that are true! eg she writes 6x100 =600 5=605 which is not true.

  72. Don't think much to your relaunch replacement to Carol - Possibly even worse dress sense and bordering on equally irritating, and definitely worse with her numbers. I've not watched the show in years but couldn't believe that she couldn't solve a simple maths problem (today's show Thurs 25th). Even a slow mode like me got it in the time!

  73. I suppose we have to put up with that un-funny "Comedian" Tim someting for the rest of the week. But please do NOT ask him again. He is as obnoxious as Brandich, and even Jeff is funnier. Susie is very tolerant, and Rachel is drop dead gorgeous, as well as being a brain box. (And the lower heels are MUCH better)

  74. I have watched every show since Jeff and Rachel have been presenting. One thing I have noticed is that there has only been one female guest in Dictionary Corner - the lovely Kate Humble. More female guests in future please. Apart from that I love the show. Love Rachel and Susie. Jeff is my favourite TV presenter (even though he supports Hartlepool Utd!) Only joking Jeff! Best Wishes from a Torquay Utd fan. P.S. How about inviting Helen Chamberlain as guest in Dictionary Corner - let's see how clever she really is!

  77. Madge on 16th June 2009 at 12.40 am So pleased that countdown was re-installed after all the fuss of Carol leaving. Jeff and Rachel are doing a magnificent job. Very noticibly is the fact that Rachel doesn't keep looking at herself on the monitor like Carol used to do. Very noticable when I was part of the audience. Sadly I do not like the new set -too blue and everyone is too far apart now. Keep up the good work.

  79. I think Jeff is fantastic - a huge improvement on both of Des O'Connor and Lynam. Rachel is very good professionally, but doesn't seem to have much personality. She comes across as bland - though I'm sure she's not outside of the show. I don't like the way she says 'another *' when there is a repeated letter - I can see that myself (minor point I know). Finally, on some of the vowels seem to be over-stressed and come across horribly. But the new Countdown is a lot better than I was expecting. <clap clap>

  80. Thursday 11th June. Oh dear Rachel, what on earth were you wearing today? The hem was very uneven the back neck gaped. I hope you didn't spend a lot of money on that dress as it was so badly fitting, take it back if you can or get someone to alter it for you. What was the sheet affair you wore yesterday all about? Perhaps the wardrobe department should step in, having said that you did look good the other day, so good that even my unobservant husband noticed and mentioned it.

  81. 1. Comment 'I like the new team. Susie Dent is a must member but the newcomers are doing well. Whilst Jeff Stelling does rather overdo his self deprecation, he brings the contestants into the programme very pleasantly at the start and end, much more than Des used to, which is right. The current biggest gripe from her indoors and myself is with the unrandom randomness of the letters. The cards are set up in advance manually and not by computer. So why, even on the first game (where an element of contrivance might be in order), might there be three of the same consonants which do not complement the three same vowels (3 i's or a's, say,) which are also included in the same 9 letters? I am sure that those who manage these things could help to ensure more interesting sets of letters - and perhaps even manage a 'u' to go with a 'q' occasionally, to avoid poor old 'q' being an outsider in an 8 letter juggle fest.' 2. I cannot see where else to enter my limerick, called It's a Number's Game 'Though a numbers whiz, young Rachel Riley Can't work out why Jeff's smiling shyly. You don't need a statistician Or Oxford mathematician, To see which figure he's counting so highly.' Stephen Chapman

  82. Please please please dress Rachel according to her age and figure. She has unfortunately a fairly large 'rear' therefore should not wear very tight fitting skirts which only emphasise it. She is also a very pretty girl and should wear young clothes not clothes that an older woman would wear. Sorry but I feel for her, she never looks comfortable. Please don't take this as a rude comment I only want to see such a pretty girl dressed correctly.

  86. I find it annoying that people get annoyed(see posts below) that Rachel uses the word 'times' in the numbers section. 'multiplied' is a bit of a mouthful and maths is all about efficiency. That's what I like about Countdown, that the maths section is distinct from the words section.

  89. Rachel's use of the word 'times' as a verb grates a bit with us. When she gets a number in the middle of a calculation, she invariably then says 'Times that by the 6 to get ***' Surely she should use the verb 'multiply' instead. Is this another instance of 'sat sitting' and such other ungrammatical terms creeping into general use? Perhaps Susie may care to comment. Still enjoy the show though!

  90. Jeff and Rachel have settled into what is now, in my humble opinion, a better show. After Richard sadly died it was never going to be the same. Carol was no longer right for it. Rachels clothes are really great. Wish I was her size. The whole show seems more relaxed and the contestants now seem to be important to the show - not Des and Carol. I agree with other comments I have just read - KEEP MR. BRANDRETH OFF THE SHOW. I am sure that Susie would agree with me. I get the feeling he makes her really uncomfortable. 92. I agree that the new personalities on Countdown are great. I did watch a few with Des O'Connor and the "bland" man but did not enjoy the programme. Obviously, it was not the same without Richard but Des has no charisma, although I felt he tried really hard. Even Carol could not compensate for the lack of a good presenter. 98. Having been Countdown fans for many years, and especially fans of Richard Whiteley, my husband and I were apprehensive about the new team taking over at Countdown after Christmas. However, we needen't have worried!. We are enjoying Countdown more than ever with the new presenters, and have even got used to the very blue set which was a bit eye-popping at first. Jeff Stelling seems genuinely warm and friendly and we admire the way he chats more to the contestants than Des O'Connor ever did. It must put them at their ease at the begining of the show. We love Jeff's puns (so like Richard!) and the fact that he gets on with the competition much faster, cutting out some of the old pre-contest banter between Des and Carol that we found irritating. Rachel is quite delightful, pretty AND clever. We both love the really pretty outfits she wears and feel she has far better dress sense than Carol ever had! We were so relieved that Susie stayed with the show - it just wouldn't be the same without her and some of the new dictionary corner guests have been really entertaining and have brought a breath of fresh air to the show. (I would love to see Martin Jarvis again though!) Our main praise is for the fact that show now seems to concentrate more on the actual competition and that the contestants have been brought more into the limelight. The old show was becoming a vehicle in which Carol and Des starred, with the contestants coming a poor second. So 'Well done' to all at the new Countdown -we love the changes and the new personnel - it's now even better than in the good old Richard days!

  114. AN ODE TO COUNTDOWN I have been watching countdown since the day it first begun. I have witnessed every contestant that has played the game and won. I have also seen the misery of those who try but will surely lose. How embarrassing to be on the show and end up in there shoes. I watched Carol work her magic with numbers randomly selected. I watched Suzy cast a spell on us with origins of words she had collected. I watched Richard and Des and Des again in charge of the games direction. Contestants like pawns in a game of chess vying for word perfection. I have listened to hundreds of guests tell there stories before the break. Some of them so boring that I found it hard to stay awake. But some were so talented you could listen to them all day. It’s at times like this I really love this show and so glad its here to stay. Now it’s Rachel playing with numbers and Jeff Stelling running the game. The change took some getting used to and the format is almost the same. However, if there is one thing I have learned about this channel 4 wonder. It’s not who’s on or running the show. It’s simply a nine letter number.

  115. I've been watching Countdown since the letters where white on purple and I still miss RW a great deal. When I heard that Des Lynham was going to take over I thought "OMG,he's going to talk football all day long!". I was 75% wrong and when he did talk footie,he made it funny, while at the same time showing us his talent for voices as he read out the viewers e-mails. Then came Des OConnor who has his own Magic, that Irish charm and elegance. Now what have we got? Someone who can kill the only e-mail joke he was allowed to read out in 4 months.I have the feeling that some of his jokes are so obscure that they fly over the heads of football fans....(think..).. The boy has a contract that has to be kept to and honoured, but when his time is up could we PLEASE have someone who actually has enough pizzaz and sparkle to wake up us old fogies, not to mention the students (Brandreth:-"Now my children are at university they think Countdown is Breakfast Television"),and others who rely on our daily dose of mental gymnastics. We need someone to WAKE US UP with witty repartee, jovial banter and something to say that the majority of the audience can relate to. 118. Been meaning to email for ages to say that I'm a returning Countdown fan who is overjoyed by the new team. I didn't like the post-Richard changes and felt the show had become too 'show biz' with not enough emphasis on the games. I had stopped watching altogether. Now off work with a degenerative illness, I gave the programme another chance - so glad I did. Jeff is lovely: warm, funny, and he takes the games seriously. I really like the way he joins in and offers his words and numbers so modestly. I'm sure I'm not the only middle-aged female football fan who also enjoys the footie references. The rest of the team are great, and the whole tone of the programme is inclusive and educational. Rachel shows that women can be intelligent and attractive, and that Oxbridge is not necessarily the preserve of upper class men. I'm pleased that we're hearing more from Susie. Her vignettes are always interesting, well presented and thought provoking. She has a knack of being informative without being patronising - a hard balance to achieve but one she seems to manage effortlessly. Thanks to all for all your hard work. ps one little quibble! Please remind contestants not to choose too many vowels. We really didn't need 5 vowels and 4 consonants today, Hamish!

  127. Well,"Countdown" was one of my favourite shows but now, because of the smirky, eye-shutting Jeff Stelling and his often contrived weak humour,I can't watch it without getting annoyed. I must say that I agree with the comment about the lack of audience participation, especially now that they not being given the chance to solve the "Countdown Conundrum". I was glad to hear that Rachel no longer extends the consonants, especially the "ess-er"!

  129. I love the new show and think Jeff and Rachel are teriffic. I was very disappointed in David Lloyd when talking about countries and was left very annoyed at his attitude to my beloved South Africa. All he had to do was just not mention the country. To say one can like Pakistan and India and be quite insulting about South Africa was uncalled for. surely he must know that a lot of South Africans watch the show and were fans of David, so he did not only insult their country but them also. I always had respest for him and I am sure the hospitality he received in S.A. would have been second to none so his remarks were uncalled for and quite a few of my South African friends who love countdown will not watch it while he is on in guest corner. Be careful what you say David.

  130. Now that Jeff, Rachel and Susie have really settled in to the New Countdown, I am hopeful of a long, rainy Spring and Summer. The garden must get done, but Countdown must be watched! Keep smiling

  131. I have watched countdown with my husband for years but we are very disapointed with it now.my husband will not watch it now as he finds Jeff very annoying and rather too smarmy, also we miss the likes of Tom O,Connor who gaves us some good clean jokes.Carol is missed very much, and I just cannot see these two lasting too long

  132. The new team have settled in very well and I enjoy the changes - Jeff is a natural and I think he is the best presenter of the show yet. Rachel is very good and so nice - she get better every show. Well done. Pity about the shows that follow - Deal or No Deal has run its course and the man who talks to a dogs backside has as much talent has his dogs. Best when he's on a break; which is not often enough.

  133. Geoff you said(Good Friday)that dancing was forbiden in Yorkshire today (as it is in some other coutries)- traditionally Yorkshire does not count Good Friday as part of the Easter break having (Easter) Tuesday instead. My dad always used to say "they are heathens in Yorkshire") he was from Lancashire. Congratulations on an excellent programme.

  135. I think that the new format of Countdown is great. Now that Rachel has lowered her heels it is perfect. She is beautiful. Jeff is certainly an improvement on Des O'Connor as he does not laugh at his own jokes. Furthermore, and most important, it is fabulous that Susie is still with us. She is the star of the show, with a lovely personality Regards Frank

  136. I have been thoroughly enjoying the new line-up. Jeff Stelling shows an interest in the contestants that was lost with the two Des's. It has been good to watch Rachel's confidence grow over the weeks. I do wonder who chooses her wardrobe though. Some of the earlier outfits were unflattering to put it mildly (and politely!)

  137. Following Rita's comment, I do wonder why we never see the audience nowadays. There seems to be such determination to keep them out of sight that I sometimes wonder if an audience exists at all. We know that many comedy shows have canned laughter, so... I hope that that is an unworthy suspicion.

  138. I MISS NOT GOING TO THE AUDIENCE TO ASK IF THEY CAN SOLVE THE FINAL CONUNDRUM AND SHOWING OF THE NEXT DAYS CONTESTANT.

  142. I am in the United States and I love the show! My only complaint is that there is no outlet to see the latest episodes other than occasional YouTube clips. I would love to keep up with the latest action via 4OD, but unfortunately I am not able to view the clips since I am not in the UK. Is there any way that this can be changed? It might open the show up to an entire new audience of fans!

  143. I read recently that the viewing figures are down since the new regime of Countdown. If this is correct those who have deserted don't know what they are missing! My household think the new line-up is great the wit of Jeff and the Glamour of Rachel are a hit and, of course, the ever knowledgeale Susie. Still a great show and if I may be so bold in my opinion the best line-up yet.

  144. Having being in studio audience today,I disagree with most of the blog contributors. Rachel is lovely, she can handle the high heels, make no mistake, they are part of her. keep up the good work Rachel, you make the show for me.and for the moaners "you should get out more !!"
