  2. I WAS SAD WHEN RICHARD DIED - I WAS UPSET WHEN CAROLE LEFT. RACHEL IS A VERY TALENTED AND PRETTY YOUNG LADY - WHO IS ADVISING HER REGARDING HER CLOTHES? A LARGE PART OF YOUR DEVOTED VIEWERS ARE LIKE ME "RETIRED" - THE CLOTHES CURRENTLY WORN BY RACHEL ARE MORE APPROPRIATE FOR "NIGHT CLUBBING" PLEASE PLEASE MAKE HER WEAR LONGER DRESSES AND CLOTHES THAT ARE LESS TIGHT.....THIS IS A WONDERFUL FAMILY SHOW AND WE "THE VIEWERS" SHOULD BE ABLE TO WATCH WITHOUT BEING MADE TO FEEL VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. 3. Dear Sir / Madam I would like to complain about the unfair result of Friday's game. The champion put forward a word 'swords' - but there was no w in the choice of letters. The challenger lost by 3 points, but if he had won the round with the disputed word - he would have been the new champion. I think this is unfair. Yours Faithfully John Slaven

  5. Hello Countdown staff! It is 5/2/10, and I have just watched Countdown as I normally do. They mentioned a word, Schnellygutter? I can't find anything about this word anywhere, but I think it sounds fantastic. They said it is thought to have come from German, and describes politicians... Could you please tell me how to spell it correctly so I can find out more?

  6. Hello dear Countdown Staff, I've been reading some press about the new Carol, Rachel Riley. She seems to be getting the same old fashioned criticisms which Carol received on occasion about her dress sense being too revealing. In this day and age I would just like to say that it's a positive thing that such an attractive woman is showing herself in an extremely educational program. Sexual desire is used often nowadays in society to sell products by attracting attention to adverts etc. Young males don't stand a chance of not looking towards the fizzy drink commercial with their fantasy woman luring them in. So why not a beautiful sexy woman to lure them towards area's of life they should be lured too. Yours Sincerely, Martin Lehane

  7. I never get to see countdown as I'm always working, however for the first time this week I have seen Carol's replacement. What a gorgeous girl. Then I read all the comments posted here. When did your viewers last go out of their houses? I see girls from 10 to 30 years old dress in less than Rachel does every time I go to my local city. Its called fashion. Every person does it. Lay off her. At least she isn't some common trash.

  9. Quite often on the program Rachel, Suzy, Jeff and the contestants look sniffy about newly minted Americanisms like "deplane", "disbark" and "detrain." The latter - "detrain" appears in Robert Graves's autobiograhy "Goodbye to All That" written as recently as 1929. Obviously took a long time to catch on! Can Suzy find any earlier uses?

  11. How can anyone be offended by a dress? She should wear what she is comfortable in and she looks great, Carol wore what she wanted to. What is the problem with being good looking and intelligent? I think she is a great role model that younger viewers can relate to. Some people are also sad enough to pick up on the fact that she says 'times by' do you also want her to say 'subtract' that is just petty. I have to say there are some very sad countdown viewers some of the pettiness of the comments make me laugh. Just get over it and enjoy the show.

  12. I'm glad that I'm not alone in making a complaint about Rachel's dresses being far to saucy and short - for what is supposed to be a quiet, respectable quiz show on daytime TV. I feel sorry for that girl. But now I am now especially annoyed, not least because some less tolerant people in my house have now BANNED me from watching Countdown because they find Rachel's attire deeply offensive. I have always watched Countdown and enjoyed solving its puzzles. Now, I can no longer watch one of the very few programmes I choose to watch on TV. Thanks a heap.

  18. Gosh. Now I see the dilemma the Countdown management team have. On the one hand you have a bright, intelligent and gorgeous lady like Rachel who adds sparkle and dresses to enjoy her feminity whilst clearly having a brain the size of a planet. On the other hand, your other commentors below are clearly threatened by it. I am sure there are lots of reasons why they are threatened but I won't dwell on it. Unlike their comments I am not trying to cause any offence. What I will say is that even in the hallowed Carol's day there was a grand tradition of her dressing to impress - in outfits equally risque. How you pacify these Daily Mail readers without making everyone look drab and tweed-clad like them - I really don't know. Good luck. In the meantime, please support Rachels' keeping up Carols' tradition of combining brains, beauty and a little sparkle at the board. And ignore the jealous comments of those with none of the above.

  19. Please point out to Rachel, that one from the top and the rest from anywhere else, means just that, One and only one from the top, and the others, small numbers, not as she did last week, all four from the top!! The correct terminology for maths functions should be use, e.g. multiplied by not timesed by,. And finally, surely she is paid enough to be able to afford a dress advisor, as her outfits are undewcribabley hideous. Or would it make more sense to bring back Carol?

  20. I love countdown especially the numbers section. However, my viewing pleasure has been somewhat uncomfortable recently because Rachels dresses are becoming shorter and shorter! I watch the programme for its content not for its fashion sense (or not). Todays programme was particularly gruelling, her dress just about covered her bum! Can she please wear decent knee length clothes, it is a family programme afterall. Presenters clothing should be classy, ladylike and presentable. PLEASE!

  21. I have watched Countdown for years, but find myself switching channels after 5 minutes. Jeff's fawning and inane comments are embarrassing. Rachel looks fabulous (for a sketch on Euro Trash) but for this programme her wardrobe is inappropriate. She is an intelligent and beautiful woman, so why the need to look vampy for afternoon viewing? Even my trendy and pretty 15 year old rolls her eyes at their performance!

  24. I find it disgusting the attire what the woman showing the letters is wearing. I would wea this on a night out! How short do you want your dress to be ?! It saddens me that a classic programme such as Countdown has to rely on the sex appeal of the overly skinny woman who puts the letters up. A very big let down Channel 4. 30. I am danish but have lived in this country for the last 17 years. My question is to Susie Dent, can you explain why the left side of a ship is called "PORT" in english ?. In danish, where the word come from, the left side is called "bagbord" signifying the side of the ship who is behind the "Steersman". The steering oar is on the right side wherefore that side is called "styrbord" steerboard. In all scandinavian languages the expression styrbord and bagbord is used, and also in german "steyrboord" und "backboord" and even in spanish "estribord" y "babord". Why are you english speaking people against all others, it was us who thaught you people to sail in the first place. I have asked all over the internet and received the most ridiculous answers. Can you do better as I have great confidence in you ?.

  40. On today's programme (19.1.10) the soultion to the conundrum was 'toothcomb'. There is no such word. It is possible to 'go over things with a fine-tooth comb' (i.e. a comb with many teeth), but 'toothcomb' on its own has no meaning - no-one is going to comb their teeth; why was this word put in?

  41. A Scrabble Question for Susie: I'm in a hell of a mess; with only a few letters to be played I am trailing my wife by 25 points. Yes, I'm literally scrabbling for my life. A glance at the board shows a Q next to a vacant triple word square. Now my Oxford Shorter English Dictionary lists q and therefore it can be argued that q is a word (don't dictionaries list only words?) whose plural is qs which would score 33 points; AND I HAPPEN TO HAVE AN s!!!! If we consider how one writes down the well-known phrase " Mind ones ps and qs"? Surely this suggests that q is a word and qs is its plural. Furthermore how would one write down a question such as " How many bs are there in Stelling? ( Answer it depends which bonnet he is wearing) WEAK JOKE The snag is that the general opinion on the web does not regard qs as a valid Scrabble word. This is outrageous. Perhaps, Susie, you can offer some sympathy whilst I sip my afternoon tea and contemplate my imminent defeat? If you can't help me then I suppose I'll have to fall back on the oft-used Scrabble excuse of having had poor luck with the letters I drew. Steve

  44. PART TWO Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust. Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake. England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer... And that's the truth...Now, whoever said History was boring ! ! !

However, must agree that Rachel's dresses are more like long jumpers and Jeff still can't keep his eyes open. Glad to see audience participation has been resurrected. I was in the audience with my brother about 3 years ago, and was so delighted that Pam Ayres was in dictionary corner, when can we see her again? Love Jo Brand, what about Gyles B? To mention other favourites would take too much space! It will never be the same without Richard and Carol, but please, leave Susie there! She blends it all together for me. 47. Wouldn't it be nice if the program didn't contain those boring bits where the nominal celeberaties try and entertain us with the 'exciting' events that happened to them.....MEGA BORING or WHAT.... and Susies OWN interpretation of HER origins of words that she tries to make us believe by waiving here arms about to punctuate various points......COME ON, give us a break. Most of us just want to join in the program in working out our own answers. So, lets get rid of the DRIBBLE and have a decent program that we enjoy for what it is (a gameshow) not a platform for has-beens.

  49. I thought Countdown was meant to be a family quiz show especially as it is shown mid afternoon. I felt uncomfortable watching Rachel this afternoon. Her dress was unacceptable for such a show. I felt that it was more appropriate for a fashion show. Remember too that it is a winter afternoon so covered up legs and arms would be more appropriate. I think the "word" lady is very bright but my goodness when is she going to brighten herself up, especially her hair. Quite dowdy. Sorry but have been thinking about this for some time and have finally put "pen to paper".

  51. On todays Countdown, the subtitles were, once again, a disgrace! The word 'folding' remainned on screen past the score update and was still there when the next letters were requested! I'd like to say this is unusual, but it's now the norm, and sooooo frustrating. I have a hearing deficit, so subtitles are essential. They're meant to come up as the words are spoken, not like a 'banana bus route', several flashed across the screen at once, far too fast to be read. Please, get this sorted. I've been a Countdown fan for many years, so know how the subtitles should be done. Regards Penny Stone, Hampshire, UK

  59. Just love the program & can't wait for it's return. Thought Jeff might like this joke - as the word LEOTARD crops up so often!!!! I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, So I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

  60. In answer to the question about the 'noughties'. If the last but one digit of the 2000 is 0 and so on until 2009 does that mean that 2010 onwards, until 2019, is the 'onesies' and 2020 becomes the 'twosies'etc?? Keep smiling

  62. Please can you help! I recently had a tightly contested discussion about countdown which I hope someone may clear up.... It was always my belief that the target figure generated in the numbers game is always related to the other numbers, but my friend thinks it is totally random and cant necessarily be reached..... could someone put us out of our misery?

  71. I watch countdown everyday because I love to participate to see if I can beat the contestants, sometimes I do others not. I am 81 but not a fuddy duddy but I do object to rachel rileys bum, her clothes get shorter and taper in at the bum, and her bum is quite big and needs hiding, when she does(rarely wear a dress that is normal she looks very attractive, but it is not about rachel its the game that matters otherwise we should name the show the rachel riley fashion hour. please rachel cover your rear end it is too big.

  72. Hey C4. Always been a big fan of Countdown, and I'm sad to see the ratings have fallen off. To be sure, I myself watch the programme less and less. This is a consequence of the feel of the programme moving away, too far away from the atmosphere established by the founding presentation team. Although I don't want to compare the subsequent presenters to Richard Whiteley, once it was decided the show were to go on then obviously the comparison will be made. I feel Des Lynam was okay, gave the show a good effort but leant towards the competitive a little too far. For me O' Connor was pretty hopeless, bumbling idiotically in a vain pursuit of charm or whimsy, but Stelling is horrendous. If Countdown is axed by Channel 4 then it would transfer straight over into the blue sets of Sky without a doubt. Jeff Stelling is unwatchable. If I do watch these days, it is with the remote in my grasp to press the 'mute' key whenever he is on screen. The King of Sky Smarm. On a positive note, though, I do love Rachel Riley. I think the Sky-esque makeover has gone a little too far, but she is lovely, clever, delightful to watch. I'd keep her, were I to be appointed producer, and drop Stelling back to sport broadcasting, whereever just get off my screen, and replace with the most natural selection to get Countdown back to its Whiteleian roots: Jo Brand. She loves the show (though I doubt if she does too much these days) and would be perfect to inject some weighted sarcasm and slight salacity into the increasingly humdrum schedules. Jo Brand and Rachel Riley please. ( also what happened to that gorgepus other girl in Dictionary Corner, the one who used to wear dog-collars? Bring her back too)

  74. Dear Countdown, thanks for a most enjoyable afternoon show, only problem is during the final conundrum round, as soon as Jeff (and all the previous hosts) says 'lets have a look' we all know the contestant has given the correct answer, the implied moment of tension in the seconds before the board turns over is lost. Therefore even when a contestant rings in with the wrong answer, instead of the usual ' no it's not that, rest of the time....', Jeff should still say 'lets have a look, at which point ( 2 sec. delay) the board would turn over only to reveal the same set of letters (or some other indication of an incorrect answer), thereby ensuring a genuine moment of tension. This problem was beautifully illustrated in the semi final on thursday 17 Dec 09, between Chris and Innes. Enough said, hope you can sort something out in the not too distant future. Thanks again for an otherwise excellent show and all the best for the new season, regards John

He's a massive Countdown fan. Does anyone know if this is even possible? Grateful for any suggestions. Thanks in advance, Nicola

  80. Although I love Countdown, I was disappointed that the other day, my parents were watching it with my 10 year old daughter when on Countdown, they started discussing "when they found out that Father Christmas didn't exist". I have since had to deal with a very upset daughter and, although of course she was bound to find out at some point, this could have affected children far younger than her and I feel that the decision about when to tell our children that Father CHristmas doesn't exist, should be in our hands. THank you!

  83. DOONHAMERS: The numbers chosen were 10, 5, 2, 2, 4 and 8. Innis's calculation was correct. 5x2=10, 10-2=8, 8x8=64, 64x10=640, 640 4=644. He didn't use the number 10 twice, he used it once. He made up the first 10 by multiplying the 5 and 2.

  87. I have been a fan of Countdown since its first broadcast - what is it - 28 years ago? I have always enjoyed Dr Hammond's presence until - alas - I bought his book last week after much promotion of it by the doctor. Sadly I find it very much not to my taste. I wonder what Geoff and the lovely Susie and Rachel think. But then at 87 years of age perhaps I am not up with the times which are not as they were in my early days. Incidentally Susie looks as,young as in the early days when she and I corresponded over my word "horsiclture" which got into the Oxford English dictionary for a time..

  90. My wife and myself have been watching Countdown almost from its inception, and have always enjoyed it. When I cannot watch it live, I put it on record to watch later, so that we do not miss the programme/s. Of late, you have stopped the subtitles. I do not know why, but it makes it extremely difficult for people like us, with hearing difficulty, to follow the programme. Please put subtitles back on without delay.

  96. Nigel, I'm surprised no-one you know can answer your question. The 'K' means thousand. It is short for Kilo. It's unlikely that a person would say 1,000k as it would no doubt be easier to say million, but people regularly say it for numbers less than that. For example - find the time to sit and watch Deal Or No Deal at some point, and you will notice Noel Edmunds saying (e.g) "That's the 100 K gone"
