Series 3 Summary
The culinary contest lands in Australia for a third series as five strangers take turns to cook up the perfect dinner party over the course of a week.
Over the course of a week, five strangers take it in turns to cook up the perfect dinner party. After each dinner, the guests score the host with a mark out of 10 and, at the end of the process, the top-scoring host wins a cash prize of A$2000.
Night one host is 45-year-old Leonie Bedford, who makes a living as an artist and music teacher but feels that her real talents lie in her psychic ability to see and communicate with dead people.
Leonie offers a feast of Indian cuisine, but her guests - Shane the butcher, Lance the embalmer, author and society lady Mary, and entertainer Ammie, who doesn't eat red meat - are all hard to impress.
As the evening goes on, it's clear that Mary is definitely not inspired by fellow guest Shane, who dominates the group like a bull in a china shop.
The host on the second night is kitsch and kooky embalmer Lance Proctor, who's keen to show off his collection of Xena Warrior Princess memorabilia.
Lance is preparing four courses of classic dinner party cuisine, taught to him over the years by his mother, with whom he lives.
During the evening, Leonie senses the spirits of the dead around Lance, Mary puts her foot down with Shane, there's novel, artistic entertainment for the group and, during the taxi ride home, Shane reveals his change of attitude towards Mary.
Night three belongs to lady of the manor Mary Harding, an author, poet and collector of fine perfumery. Mary believes that 'a lady doesn't reveal her age; a lady doesn't do a lot of things'.
Going back to her Greek roots, she prepares some traditional home fare, all made with the best ingredients purchased from a respected, upscale outlet. No supermarkets for Mary!
There's a love theme to the evening's food and entertainment and it's not long before passions start to run high as topics of conversation become more heated and controversial.
Tears start to flow as strong bonds are formed and Shane makes a move on his developing friendship with Mary.
The fourth and penultimate host is 43-year-old butcher Shane Saunders. Shane loves a beer, has a laugh that could shatter glass and lives alone with his dog Charlie and his cat Rocky.
Shane knows meat and he's pinned his hopes of victory on the success of his chosen cut of quality pork.
Despite Shane's rough and ready exterior, his guests are surprised to see how he presents himself in his own home, none more so than Lance.
It's a complicated night for our friendly butcher as he navigates romantic intentions on two fronts and duels with a stubborn main course.
Then there's the argument to end all arguments when all five contestants put very strong and loud opinions on the table... will there be a walk-out?
Life hasn't always been easy for short-statured Ammie Markus, the host of the fifth and final dinner party. Her ambition is to become a chef but, despite qualifying as an apprentice, she hasn't found her dream job yet.
That might change as she gets to show off her culinary skills to her guests. Her philosophy on cooking, and the execution of her menu, is to keep it simple and unpretentious.
To top the night off, Ammie will reveal her 'Baby Gaga' mime and dance routine, hoping her food and entertainment will be enough to take the A$2000 prize money.
However, the group is divided over the previous night's argument, and the quality of the food that Ammie is serving. It's a battle between the two camps when the scores come in, with the results surprising some and shocking others.
Born entertainer Cheryl Pintoy is the first host of the week, and her eclectic home certainly impresses real estate agent Lachlan Hosking.
Former body-building champion Doreen Nicolaou feels overwhelmed by Cheryl and her home, but manages to share her phobia of eating poultry.
Sales executive Donna Llewellyn also has a food confessional: she doesn't like seafood. Luckily, Cheryl doesn't have too much of either on her menu.
Her end-of-night entertainment also puts a grin on everyone's face, particularly wise-cracking train driver Tony Cook.
Night two host is competitive Donna Llewellyn, who's not ashamed to say she enjoys the finer things in life.
She wants her night to be about fine dining, so has organised a barman serving cocktails on arrival, a champagne masterclass, and the finest ingredients for her four-course menu.
Donna's obstacles to a top score are bird-phobic Doreen, who has lost her voice and has to face a duck main course, and picky and competitive Lachlan, who wants to point out her hosting mistakes.
Donna doesn't help herself when one too many glasses of champagne loosens her tongue and she says something to Cheryl that she may regret. Tony, meanwhile, is having the time of his life and soon takes up an interesting invitation from Cheryl.
Laid-back funnyman Tony Cook, who hosts the third dinner party, reckons too many ingredients in a dish are a waste. He's a meat-and-three-veg kind of guy, but is very particular about how he likes his meat prepared.
Tony seals his meat in air-tight containers three months in advance, which he claims preserves the flavour and ages it beautifully. The only worry is that some of his guests may want him to over-cook it on the barbecue.
At the table, Cheryl and Donna are still a little tense with each other after Donna's dig the night before. However, it doesn't seem to affect the vibe of the night until Tony tells a joke that Lachlan finds funny but the girls don't.
Doreen Nicolaou has been the quiet one of the group all week, not that you'd know it watching her bounce around her kitchen on night four, which she is hosting.
She is exuberant, excited and even rewards herself with a set of push-ups whenever she gets a dish prepared on schedule.
Doreen the well-organised cook becomes a bubbly and warm host, finally revealing her body-building secret to the group, impressing them all.
What's more, the night ends with some surprising entertainment that may be worth an extra point.
The group are up for a big final night and arrive keen to see what competitive Lachlan Hosking can come up with.
Everyone expects he will be the perfect host, but he also surprises them with some fun entertainment in the back garden. The night is upbeat and Lachlan's simple but fresh take on food is a hit.
Just when he thinks everything is going too well, he has a major mishap with his potatoes for the main course. Lachlan is devastated and, while dessert is also a hit, he thinks he's blown it.
Everyone is now thinking about the scoring and the announcement of the winner, but Tony wants to take centre stage one more time with a move that could launch him into dinner party stardom.
The first host of the week in Gold Coast is veterinarian and party animal Vanessa Escott. Her meal is spoiled by a cheap cut of meat and would-be comic Warren Kibblewhite isn't joking when he says he'd feed it to his dog.
The random ramblings of ditzy guest Anita Loader are a welcome distraction until Warren says something unfortunate.
She's not amused, and neither is Vanessa after Warren implies that she has overcooked the dessert. But is that serious enough to hurt her scores?
Night two's well-organised host, Sheila Kiss, lives up to her personal philosophy of 'keep it simple, stupid'. She dishes up some stunning food, but it's her entertainment that really dazzles the guests.
The lamb in the main course isn't to everyone's taste and Sheila is questioned about exactly how home-made her home-made ice cream is.
However, at the end of the night her guests all agree that Sheila knows how to throw a great dinner party. Will our perfect host get the score she wants?
Versace-loving Anita Loader throws an Aussie icon-themed dinner party on night three, with Gold Coast traffic wardens and didgeridoo players.
She serves up a dish with a name she can't pronounce and tries to pass off shop-bought ingredients as her own. There's no shortage of drinks and 'best friend for ever' Vanessa loves her pink champagne so much that she licks it off the table cloth.
While her food has been a little bit random, rather like Anita herself, the party vibe means that nobody leaves disappointed.
On the penultimate evening, surfer and science teacher Lachlan Gibbs adopts a South Pacific Tiki-bar theme for his dinner party. He keeps the exotic drinks flowing and there's no shortage of bad jokes all night.
But a cocktail-making competition is almost the undoing of party-loving Vanessa. She takes a tumble but is actually more hurt about losing out to perfect Sheila.
Everyone's impressed by Lachie's 'Tiki trio' entertainment, but the evening begins to drag when the hungry guests endure a long wait for their main course. Has being too laid back cost Lachie a winning night?
On the final night, would-be comedian Warren Kibblewhite finally reveals his comic side. He's after laughs, but some of his guests are out for revenge.
Warren's been critical of the others all week and the girls decide it's payback time. Sheila leads the charge, accusing him of being a game player, but is it Sheila who's really playing the game tonight?
Warren's dishes go down well, but he has to survive Sheila's constant sniping. She serves up a litany of complaints all evening, from dirty cutlery to a lack of drinks. So Warren brings out his guitar in a last-ditch effort to win everyone over before the winner is announced.
First up to host in Brisbane is slightly eccentric office manager Suze Manning, who claims to be a lady of title.
The guests are puzzled when Suze brings out her extra guest for the night - a lifesize doll called Gypsy whom she engages in one-sided conversations.
Even more puzzling are the unusual food combinations, such as meatballs in a berry sauce. Will the group of creative cooks reward Suze's night of weirdness, or will it cost her dearly?
Hospital secretary and serial dater Jacki Derrick aims high on night two of the cooking competition. But her competitive edge is blunted by spilled drinks, choking guests and overcooked meat.
Fussy Bromwyn is worried she'll get food poisoning from the entree, but a stray bean causes her more problems. Meanwhile, Gerry gets more than he bargained for when Suze makes a strange request.
Can Jacki's butterscotch schnapps and tasty dessert keep her guests on side?
Night three's host is short-order cook Gerald Cox. The others are worried that Gerry's day job may stand between them and the A$2000 prize.
However, Gerry reckons his ace cards are his vodka slushie machine, the ten-pin bowling alley he's laid on as entertainment and the kilt that he'll wear to greet his guests.
The generous spread of food proves too much for some of the contestants, but Gerry's lamb is certainly a hit with MaryAnn.
The host on the penultimate evening is florist and food allergy sufferer Bromwyn Meakins-Lines, whose gluten-free menu and long list of food dislikes has left her guests with low expectations.
Bromwyn's prep is a mish-mash of mess and stress, but a flower arranging competition goes down well with her guests... certainly better than her over-seasoned main course.
There's a hint of romance in the air before Bromwyn serves up dessert and, at the end of the night, everyone agrees that the gluten-free menu was a lot tastier than they thought it would be.
Last to host in Brisbane is life coach MaryAnn Riddell-Birkbeck, who aims to impress with her Hollywood-themed evening.
Her guests have been told to dress as Oscar winners, but there's definitely disappointment when MaryAnn's 'sensual soul food' fails to cater to Bromwyn's food allergies.
There's speculation at the table about romance between two of the guests but, before the night is out, one of them will be disappointed and the other just annoyed.
Meanwhile, emotions run high when the five cooks find out the winner of this week's prize.
