As set out at the start of the film, when she was just 10 years old Cataleya Restrepo's (Amandla Stenberg) parents were murdered by gangsters involved in Colombia's narcotics industry.
Shocked and brutalised by the experience the youngster vows revenge. She is rescued by her uncle Emilio (Cliff Curtis), who removes the colombiana from her native Bogotá, takes her to Chicago and trains her to be an assassin.
Now, years later, Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) has grown to become a ruthlessly efficient, super-fit hitwoman managed by Emilio. But, from her perspective, the time is ripe for her to avenge her parents.
And so she does, with ever more inventiveness as she gets closer to her quarry, and with so much violence and so high a body count that one of the FBI team investigating the rash of murders refuses to believe that a woman could be responsible.
