Oscar-winning comedy-drama, written and directed by Mike Mills (Thumbsucker), starring Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Mélanie Laurent.
The film centres on graphic designer Oliver Fields, who's unhappy with his life and wary of relationships. Cancer claimed his mother Georgia five years ago, and has just taken his father Hal too. After Georgia's death, Hal revealed that he had known he was gay all along and, aged 75, fully embraced his true sexuality and took a younger lover.
Through flashback, the narrative shows how Hal's final years forged a closer tie with his son, and also explores how Hal's repressed identity affected Georgia's life. And, after meeting beautiful Frenchwoman Anna at a party, will Oliver embrace his father's courage and pursue romance, or will he succumb to the family trait and deny his feelings?
Either way, his decision will be influenced by advice given (in subtitles) by his father's Jack Russell dog Arthur.
