Anna Karenina

Series 1

Series Summary Anna Karenina

An innovative four-part adaptation of Tolstoy's epic love by Allan Cubitt.

Set against the panorama of 19th century Russia, from the decadent social milieux of the St Petersburg palaces to the simplest traditions of rural life, Anna Karenina is the story of three contrasting couples whose dilemmas strike a contemporary chord in another century. Most of all, it is the epic love story of a woman who risks everything to follow her heart.

Anna (Helen McCrory), the wife of a distinguished government minister Karenin (Stephen Dillane), travels from St Petersburg to Moscow to sort out a family crisis. Her brother Oblonsky (Mark Strong) is a serial adulterer and his long-suffering wife Dolly (Amanda Root) is threatening to leave him.

But at Moscow station Anna fatefully meets army officer Count Vronsky (Kevin McKidd) and embarks on a reckless affair that will change her life forever.
