Animals in the Womb

Tuesday 01 September 2009

Illustrating what goes on inside a living creature is a specialist task, this article explains how it's done.

Special Effects Director - David Barlow:

It involved not only specialist photography such as filming cellular events through the microscope using the latest digital photographic techniques, but also the recreation of incredible events happening inside the body such as foetal development and birth.

Many of these events are impossible to film in a living body and so in order to recreate such sequences, Special Effects Director Dr. David Barlow uses innovative medical filming techniques in combination with anatomically accurate and highly realistic models to create the feel of really being within the body. Barlow's specially customised camera set-up captures the images on 35mm film and lets the viewer move in a three dimensional space around the models, allowing viewpoints within the womb that would otherwise be impossible.
