Becky

Thursday 08 July 2010

Becky celebrated her 19th birthday on the day the group flew to the UK. Up until a year ago, she was a member of the strictest Amish sect - the Swartzentruber Amish.

Becky has seen little of the outside world, and, having never left home for anything like this amount of time before, the trip does feel like a giant step for her. She’s a keen gardener and is concerned about the plants in her greenhouse while she's away as well as how her little brothers and sisters and her mum and dad will cope without her. Becky comes from a family of 13 children. The entire family, bar two sisters who were already married, left the Swartzentrubers just over a year ago. They still live in their Swartzentruber house with no plumbing or electricity. Apart from the installation of a generator, the only change to their house is that they have couches with soft seating whereas before they’d only had hard seats to sit on.

Becky doesn’t have any idea about Britain or where it is on the map but says, 'It would be very exciting for me, I'd love it to see other countries - I would never dreamed of doing that. It would be good for educational reasons for me to see how other people live. I want my goal to be to learn from them.'
