Blake Stanfield wants to give his father, Neil, a 65th birthday present that he will never forget - a six-day camping and rafting trip in the Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska.
After a couple of hours on the river, the guys spot floating ice. A strong current drives their raft into the ice and has them in the water in seconds.
When Neil and Blake try and struggle to the surface, they emerge into an air pocket under an ice sheet. Eventually they surface in a more gentle flow and are able to clamber out of the water. By this time, they have been buffeted, bruised and cut, and Neil is shivering uncontrollably. Blake knows that his father is dangerously close to hypothermia. They have been left with virtually nothing.
Blake sets off to attempt the 60-mile hike to Bettles, the nearest town.
