Tahar Rahim and Niels Arestrup star in Jacques Audiard's (The Beat That My Heart Skipped) gripping, highly acclaimed prison/crime thriller.
Malik El Djebena (Rahim), a 19-year-old French man of Algerian descent, begins a six-year prison sentence for violence against police officers; it's his first time in an adult jail, and he's terrified.
His fear and vulnerability make him easy prey for Cesar Luciani (Arestrup), the Corsican gangster who virtually runs the institution. Luciani quickly takes the youngster under his wing and 'gives' him his first task: the impossible-to-refuse, horrifically bloody murder of a fellow inmate.
Audiard's relentlessly brutal, masterful drama then tracks the relationship between the two men, as El Djebena extends both his formal and criminal education, rises through the ranks, and becomes an increasing threat to his 'mentor'.
The film was Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated, won a Bafta and scooped the 2009 Grand Prize at Cannes (as well as numerous other awards worldwide). In French, Arabic and Corsican, with English subtitles.
