The Miracle of Carriage 346

In the morning rush hour a southbound train left King's Cross station. A few moments later, a bomb detonated in one of the train's packed carriages.

Just six feet away from the bomber was Gill Hicks. She gives an extraordinary account of staring death in the face. She lost three quarters of her blood, and her heart stopped beating twice, but she describes how she heard an inner voice encouraging her to fight for her life.

Susan Harrison, on her daily commute to work, was 10 feet from the bomber. A nurse who specialised in assisting surgery, she knew exactly how to save herself from certain death. Then she began to try to calm other injured passengers even though she was trapped on the floor in the twisted carriage.

The closest survivor of all to the bomber was George Roskilly. He was just three feet away from the explosion; a foot either side and he would have been killed, but the bodies in the packed carriage shielded him from the blast and he escaped with barely a scratch.
