Friday the 13th Part III

Showing as part of Channel 4's 3-D Week, Steve Miner's third film in the horror franchise leaps off the screen. Set the day after the second film ended, Jason (Richard Brooker) is still on the loose. While the hunt for him continues, another group of teenagers arrive at Lake Crystal. Among them is Chris (Dana Kimmel), who is troubled by visions from the past where she was attacked in the woods by a deformed monster, only to awake safe in her bed. Determined to face her demons, she and her boyfriend Rick (Paul Kratka) are among the group partying at the Lake but Jason, who has now acquired his trademark hockey mask, is ready to exact gruesome revenge for past slights all over again.

  3. It's amazing how 3D can make a terrible film highly watchable. Some of the 3D effects were very effective (billowing washing on the line, in car shots & the spear gun shot to name a few). Lets hope we see some more feature length films but please lets have a sensible distribution system for glasses next time.

  4. OK it was never gonna be as effective as the polarized 3-D version I was lucky enough to see at the NFT a few years back. But C4 deserves credit for their colorcode 3-D version, which worked better than the official 3-D DVD from Paramount! Hope we get another 3-D week in the future with some classic 3-D movies from the 50's. @JONNY B: The movie was not cut at all. And a scene of Jason taking the mask of Shelly wasn't even filmed. ???

  6. I saw this film when it was originally released in the 80s on a huge silver screen with polarised glasses and it was impressive. The fact that it was in a big cinema (there aren’t any of those cinemas left anymore) helped the 3-D effect. I remember the main credits coming all the way from the screen to just in front of my eyes (honestly!), the most impressive main credits ever. Also, it was produced using film and I prefer stereoscopic images originated on film than digitally. The film is rubbish but the 3-D cinematography is very good. Of course, a lot of this will be lost on TV since current displays cannot create the same level of stereoscopic quality but most importantly, a TV screen, albeit big will always be smaller than a cinema screen and so the ‘window effect’ that kills the coming at you effects will be higher. I have to say that albeit the limitations of 3-D TV, Channel 4’s effort is the most impressive I have seen so far without having to add extra hardware. The original colours are well preserved, something that does not happen with anaglyphic (ColorCode does not rate their system as anaglyphic). Yesterday’s screening had a good level of depth and some of the shots were quite impressive, of course, due to TVs limitations there is going to be a lot of ghosting, especially with objects coming out of the screen. I do not remember the film well after all this year but if it is true the film was edited, this is a despicable action since even poor films like this one must be presented in the way their authors intended. I think channel’s 4 effort is commendable although it is a pity they have not shown more films and specially the fact that they have not shown any of the 50s classics like House of Wax, Dial M for Muder, Kiss Me Kate, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, %u2026 Also, I think their comments on the Queen in 3-D footage is inaccurate since this footage has been shown at the NFT in London in the past and is referred to in several books about 3-D that are several years old. They wanted to show it as a great discovery but I do not think it is such and it has been known for a while that it exists. Also, the original films were cut and overdubbed. I suppose they have to compromise between the general audience who would get bored watching those ‘old’ 3-D films and the 3-D geeks like me who would like the complete films being shown. I was surprised that there was no mention to the fact that what really killed 3-D was Cinemascope, since theatres were able to offer something much better than TV without the extra expense (for producers) of using the double amount of film to shoot a film and for the prints. It would be good if someone from Channel 4 could post here and tell us if there are any further plans to show 3-D, especially since people will be able to keep the glasses at home and thus avoiding unnecessary waste, come on Channel 4, be ecological please and let us know your 3-D plans for the future!

  7. Hmm, the 3d in this didn’t work very well, and even when it did work it added nothing to what was actually a terrible film.
