3D Week

Series 1 | Episode 1 | The Queen in 3D

The Queen in 3D

The incredible story of young film makers Bob Angell and Arthur Wooster, as they experimented with the technology of the future, using a pioneering 3D camera rig to film a remarkable 3D colour newsreel they named 'Royal Review'.

Their incredible footage includes the Queen attending a variety of Royal engagements in the weeks leading up to and after the Coronation in 1953: a very Royal Epson Derby in which the Queen's own horse competed; a trip down the Thames on the Royal Barge; a visit to Edinburgh; and the glittering Coronation Procession itself, with the Queen in her golden coach making her way to and from Westminster Abbey.

While Bob and Arthur reveal the story behind their film, historians, royal biographers and eye-witnesses give a sense of what it was like be there as they recall their poignant and often humorous accounts of the events.

And Bob and Arthur shoot new 3D footage of the Queen today using state-of-the-art video 3D cameras. Bob is invited to Buckingham Palace to film Her Majesty at a Royal Garden party and it turns out to be just as rainy as Coronation Day itself. And Arthur does some bird-watching, following the Queen to the historic swan-upping ceremony on the Thames, more than 50 years after he first filmed her in 3D on the river for 'Royal Review'.

  4. JOHN, the reason the 3d didn't work for you is because you used Red and Green glasses. The effect only works with amber and blue glasses.

  6. I have a pair of red/green 3d glasses and I have been watching C4s 3d program and to be quite honest it's rubbish!! All I see is green colourless image which hardly changes from watching it without the glasses. I can see why it never caught on So i watched friday the 13th to see if this faired any better, but no. You could see they were aiming objects to try and give an effect but it just did not work, or my eyes are too close together. Looks like those people who could not get glasses have not missed anything.

  7. We were looking forward to the 3D series of programmes. However, despite visits to half a dozen branches of Sainburys, we were unable to obtain an 3D glasses. This is not surprising considering that I have read that some people were taking as many as 20 pairs. You had an excellent idea for a programme but this has been ruined by the cavalier manner in which you allowed the glasses to be distributed. Could you not have asked Sainsburys to keep the glasses on the counter and only allow two pairs per customer? Alternatively, as this is Children in Need week, why not ask people to donate, say one pound, per pair of glasses. This would have been beneficial to the Charity and would have discouraged the selfish. If you run these programmes again please, please, do better next time.

  10. We have been trying to get some glasses for weeks. Nowhere has them. I would have been happy to pay for them it would have cost me less than it has trying to track them down. The members of this household have been Channel 4 supporters and enthusiasts for a long time but this has left us exasperated and annoyed and obviously we will not be watching the 3D broadcasts and as a result probably other programmes as well. Frankly I don't care how many specs you have distributed we haven't been able to get any nor has anyone we know. It seems a brilliant idea for reducing the size of your audience.

  11. I could not get any glasses for love nor money. I love 3D stuff and the most irritating thing is that I have several red/ green viewing specs (the usual format) but for some reason this 3D is done in blue/yellow, so normal red green glasses are useless. Just to add insult to injury, the makers of the program show all the interviewees wearing RED/GREEN glasses!!! Fraudulently claiming to be watching and viewing the films with us .VERY annoying! If they had put these on sale I would willingly have bought a pair. Bad planning all round by Channel Four on what would otherwise have been a fantastic week of telly.

  14. We have made our best efforts to ensure that 3D glasses are easily available to as many people as possible. We wanted to do two things - get 3D glasses to the maximum people possible across the UK, and make the glasses free of charge. Sainsbury's was the best partner to make these aims happen and became our distribution partner. Having used a national chain of shops to distribute over 10,000,000 pairs of glasses we appreciate that a small amount of people will not be able to get to a Sainsbury's, and that the supply might run out in some areas. One of the benefits of using the ColorCode 3D system is the viewing experience is still excellent in normal 2D for those unable to get the glasses.

  15. I have now had the opportunity to check with my array of blue/green and blue/red 3D glasses. My conclusion? I was able to see the 3D effect much better with my red/green glasses which made the picture appear much brighter. Years ago the rage was red/green but somewhere along the way someone had the bright idea of changing to red/blue, I suppose because they were opposite ends of the spectrum thereby assuming better seperation. I hope first timer 3D fans didn't assume this was what 3D was all about and pooh pooh it as a non runner. 3D IS MUCH MORE AND BETTER THAN THAT.A lot of the Coronation footage was shot at a distance and with objects far away you cant see round them where close ups give better effect (look at distance objects in a panorama with no glasses and it looks very flat). Next: The definition of the film left a lot to be desired but this unfortunately was down to the film stock they used which was available at the time. Last: It is down to the individual what their eyes pick up and how the brain assembles that information and how the TV is lined up colourwise. THE CASE FOR: My friend and I have been making 3D films since the early 60's, on 35m/m slides and 8m/m movies using a 4 'surface coated' mirror system using red/green and polaroid. The seperation is still excellent today but in this digital camera age I have to go back to film for 3D as I haven't yet worked out how to transfer to TV. We got so advanced at one stage that we applied an anamorphic lens to shoot in 3D and scope on 8m/m and the effect was astounding. Since those early days I built a 4 mirror system with the eye seperation at 5 inches instead of the customary 2.5 inches and you could almost put your hand behind the subject which seemed to stand out so much. My parents weren't too pleased to see a silver pearlux screen across their lounge while they allowed me my fantasies. To me 3D definitely works but ONLY with ideal conditions.

  16. None to be found in Glasgow. Apparently none here for a while and none to be found in any store in the city. Not much point in watching 4 this week then. Sure advertisers will love that.

  17. No more 3D specs to be found in Lincoln either, and we're getting desperate here! Short of vandalising traffic lights what can we do to make our own? Glass paint on acetate doesn't work, we tried :( Doubt the cut up pale green lemonade bottle idea's going to work either, esp. as the other lens will comprise peering through a full glass of lemon tea! What has Channel 4 done to my furry little mind? Help!

  19. "Watch astonishing unseen footage of The Queen during her Coronation year"? This must be the same footage shown on the ITV series "The Real World" made by Television South in 1982 - and readily available at the BFI. Not so "unseen" really.

  20. We don't have a Sainsbury's in the Isle of Man. Since you have chosen to use 3d glasses using the unusual colours of amber and blue instead of the more usual red/cyan, we cannot enjoy these 3d productions in the Isle of Man. Well done Channel4 for alienating at least 80000 of us plus goodness knows how many more people in the U.K. who cannot get to a Sainsbury's.
