  1. As an Englishman living in Warwickshire, with the name I carry I feel rather connected to these events. My name, Harris, is Anglo-Norman in origin - so my very blood at some time in the long distant past was once part of the depicted times and actions. I am sympathetic to Tolkien who felt that the invasion of Frankish culture to England following the Norman conquerers led to the bastardisation and eventual death-knell of a thoroughbred English culture in Europe that would perhaps have one day stood the test of time to flourish undiminished in the society of nations. Whilst 1066 was a sad year for Englishmen of old, we must be thankful that it was one part of a chain of events that led to our contemporarious status as a rich and peaceful island with many rights and liberties as we exercise now.

  2. Tragic day for England, Harold should of held off after Stamford Bridge and attack the Normans rear, destroying their ships and stores waged a long drawn out war of attrition. Then when he had all the tribes with him he would have destroyed William and therefore had Normandy as well.I am half Angle and half Norman. An Englishman
