Look For Less

Thursday 05 March 2009

Slapping make-up on without any thought is a recipe for disaster. A thick mask of make up takes away all your beauty and makes you look like an older, duller, flatter and less pretty version of yourself.

It's not so much about the colours or the products chosen, it's mainly bad technique. Most of today's cosmetic formulations can be applied lightly and built up for a stronger colour or more coverage if necessary. You can wear bright or strong make-up looks but still look fresh, modern and natural. Many women tend to slap too much of everything on because they don't actually look at their faces properly as they are making up to see where they need coverage and were they don't. A little more thought and an occasional step back can make all the difference.

Lisa's Top 4 make up mistakes:

FOUNDATION
The worst make up mistake is overloading foundation. Too much means you lose the natural texture of the skin, which in turn can be very aging. You need to choose the right colour foundation for your skin tone. Go too dark you and run the risk of getting the tell tale line around your jawline. Foundation needs to look seamless and natural, just like skin.

EYEBROWS
Eyebrows that are harsh lined and too dark are aging and unflattering. You could almost look like you are in pantomime...not a good look. The best technique is to use light strokes, mimicking the hairs of your eyebrows, then brush through to give an all over natural effect.

BRONZER
Extreme stripey make up is a skin sin. Do not go for a bronzer that is too dark for your skin tone. It's best to add colour by layering a more natural shade. Load up your blusher brush, take most off on the back of your hand, and then lightly apply to your cheekbones. Light, simple, yet effective.

LIPS
There is nothing worse than a beige lip colour accentuated with a dark lipliner. If you want to make your lips look fuller, using a lip liner is a good idea but always use a colour that is a close match to your natural lip colour. Apply by feathering onto the lip and blending to get a natural, youthful look.
