To get the summer time golden glow the safe way, there is only one option. To fake it. Top celebrity make up artist Lisa Eldridge gives us her guide to achieving a tantastic glow without going near the sun.

Sun protection is incredibly important and not only does it help to reduce premature aging, but also the risks of skin cancer. So unless you too want to end up with the wrinkly, leathery skin of an 80 year old, make sure that you use sunscreen everyday and only tan the safe way. Fake it.

50% of achieving a good fake tan is in the preparation. Have a shower and exfoliate thoroughly by using a loofa or granule based product. Really concentrate on dry areas like the knees, heels and elbows to get rid of any dry or hard skin. Follow this by using a body lotion on these dry areas before applying the tan.

Start at the feet and work up and apply in even sweeping motions. Do every other area and then at the end, just use what is left on your hands to dust over the feet, heels and knees. Very lightly coat those areas to avoid that patchy, orange look.

For fair skin, a good product to use is Nivea Sun Touch. It is easy to apply, it comes in a mist and you can blend it in easily. It will also develop very slowly so you don't get a just baked orange glow.

L'Oreal's Sublime Bronze is also a good range of products, especially if you are more naturally olive skinned.

St Tropez is a name we all know and love – they have been specialising in fake tan for a long time. Have your first tan done in a salon professionally, and then use their products to touch it up at home.
