Due Weight to Major Parties

Due weight must be given to coverage of the major parties during the election period. Broadcasters must also consider giving coverage during the election period to other parties and independent candidates with significant views and opinions. The major parties in the UK are the Labour Party, the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats, plus the Scottish National Party in Scotland and Plaid Cymru in Wales. In Northern Ireland, the major parties are the Democratic Unionist Party, Sinn Fein, the Social Democratic and Labour Party and the Ulster Unionist Party. The Alliance Party may soon be added to this Northern Irish list. When the election period begins depends on the exact nature of the election but invariably ends with the close of the poll.
