The Big Art Project

March

The Big Art Project
A major new arts series offering a candid account of the successes and setbacks on the journey towards achieving new public works of art.

Channel 4's The Big Art Project began back in 2005 when people across the country were invited to nominate sites they felt would benefit from an art installation. Close to 1,400 nominations were received, from which seven sites were selected: Beckton, Belfast, Burnley, Cardigan, the Isle of Mull, Sheffield and St. Helens.

The programmes follow a wide range of contemporary artists as they work with the public across the sites. They include Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa, multi-media specialist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Vong Phaophanit and Claire Obussier, art and architecture practice Muf, urban art-collective Greyworld and rising star Jeppe Hein.

Big Art Project
The Big Art Project also investigates the broader debate surrounding the changing role of art in society: why has there been an explosion of public art; what role should the public play in its commissioning; and should artists be expected to help solve social problems or regenerate areas of the country through their work? The programme features contributions from Antony Gormley and Gavin Turk.
