Cutting Edge

From January

Channel 4's flagship documentary strand returns with a new run of distinctive films offering a snapshot of modern British life and directed by some of the country's most influential directors, as well as the sharpest emerging talent.

Acclaimed documentary-maker Sue Bourne, records the human stories behind all the births, marriages and deaths that take place in one city on one day. Filmed in Bristol on 20th June 2008, Love, Life and Death in a Day captures the intensely personal moments that make that particular day, for some, the most important of their lives.

Cutting Edge: My Child Champion
My Child Champion follows parents doing whatever it takes to propel their children to the top of the sporting world. 'The Wolf' is a talented golfer and 12 years old. No longer at school, he has spent every day since he was five on the golf course. Tennis player Eden is hoping to make her mark at the world under-12 championships – but will her skills match up to the expectations of her father who spends £80,000 a year on coaching and nutritionists for her?

Once upon a time it was so simple – you put out your rubbish and the bin men took it away. But not any more. We're in the middle of a refuse revolution. Put the wrong rubbish in the wrong bin, leave your bags in the wrong place or at the wrong time and you could face prosecution. The Bin Men Are Coming follows the men, and women, at the sharp end of the rubbish business.

Slips, Trips & Safety Tips portrays the work of the Health and Safety Executive and its remarkable laboratories in Buxton, telling the tale of the inspectors, consultants and council officials who make it their business to protect us from harm. Thanks to them, Britain has become one of the safest countries in the world, but has our obsession with health and safety gone too far?

Every year in Britain over 200,000 people go missing. With people more likely to be found in the first 72 hours after they have disappeared, police work against the clock. Missing: Race against Time follows detectives from the Greater Manchester Police Force's Missing Persons Unit as they try to solve individual cases and chronicles the emotional highs and lows experienced by the families of those missing.

Using specially-commissioned graphics that give an extraordinary, 360º picture of a womb during foetal surgery, Save My Unborn Baby reveals the life-or-death stories of the babies for whom radical foetal surgery is the only hope of survival. With exclusive access to surgeon Professor Kypros Nicolaides and his team at London's King’s College Hospital, this film tells the astonishing story of surgery before birth.

Could You Be a Have-a-Go Hero? features the stories of individuals who were confronted with dramatic public incidents that forced them to choose between getting involved, and risking their own safety, or remaining as passive bystanders. Combining gripping first-hand testimony with reconstructions and CCTV footage, the film reveals the long-lasting repercussions for all concerned, whatever their decisions.

As Britain begins to feel the impact of the credit crunch, people all over the country are struggling to pay for the goods they stretched themselves to buy on the never-never during the boom years. One profession, however, looks set to flourish – debt recovery. Repo Men follows a Yorkshire-based recovery firm to uncover some surprising and moving stories of life, loss and love.
