Surrogates (w/t)
JanuaryEvery year, around 60 British women have babies for childless couples. Many of them have been surrogates before. But the truth behind what drives these women is far more complex than money or altruism. Surrogates (w/t) reveals the extraordinary stories of the women addicted to giving babies away
From Jill Hawkins, the childless surrogate who is trying for baby number eight, to Carole Horlock, the world-record holder with 12 surrogate babies, this one-off documentary explores the "ultimate high" that these women experience in their roles as surrogates.
The relationship between the surrogate and the soon-to-be parents is an emotional and complex one. But for surrogates it's often the emotional intensity of this relationship that hooks them – Tammy Lynn, an American surrogate who's expecting twins for a British couple (numbers six and seven of her surrogate babies) will even be their godmother.
But when the couple walk away with their baby, the blues can set in for the surrogate. Amanda is a first-time surrogate who's already picking her second couple, despite not yet giving birth for the first. This programme examines how surrogates cope when it’s time to hand over the baby.
