Shrink Rap: Billy Connolly
Dr Pamela Connolly puts her husband on the couch in a one-off special edition of More4's acclaimed psychologically-based interview show.
Drawing on her background as a psychologist and author of the multi-million selling biography Billy Dr Pamela Connolly interviews her husband about how he has come to terms with his cruel and loveless childhood in post-war Glasgow. Connolly was abandoned by his mother at the age of three, sexually abused for years by his father and physically attacked and humiliated by the aunt who took him in.
Connolly talks about his vehement dislike of the Catholic Church, of golfers and of Brussels sprouts – and of his love of being hairy. He cries when he talks about the way music – particularly that of Bob Dylan – helped him "escape from a world where people made your nose bleed if you didn’t eat your Brussels sprouts" and about how, after leaving school with no qualifications, he found salvation, first through his work in the all-male environment of the Glasgow shipyards, and then through the folk music circuit. He also discusses how he gave up drinking after an ultimatum from Pamela, admitting that he loved drinking because he loves the company of men. He also reconciles his feelings over the death of his father.
