Sexual identity
The following script provides support information for people who are lesbian, gay or bisexual, for their parents or other family members who are having difficulties understanding or coping with their children’s sexuality.
If you would like to talk to someone about your sexuality, call the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard. This switchboard provides a 24-hour information, support and referral service for lesbians, gay men, bisexual men and women and heterosexuals from all backgrounds, throughout the UK. Contact them on 020 7837 7324 (24 hours a day, seven days a week). The lines are extremely busy, so be prepared to keep trying.
Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (FFLAG) offers confidential support, information and a sympathetic ear for parents, families and friends of lesbian, gay and bisexual people. Call them on 01454 852 418, or write to FFLAG at PO Box 84, Exeter EX4 4AN. Their website is at www.FFLAG.org.uk.
As parents, it can be difficult to find that you and your children have differing outlooks and aspirations in life. If you would like help as a parent or step-parent, you can speak to someone on the free phoneline at Parentline Plus on 0808 800 22 22 (24 hours a day).
For articles and more information on sexuality check out the Channel 4 Health House website at www.channel4.com/health where you can also post a confidential question to a trained advisor in the ‘just ask’ section at www.channel4.com/health/sex.
