Domestic violence

The following script offers details of organisations that offer information and support to men and women affected by anger and violence in relationships.

Many people - both men and women - can be affected by violence in a relationship. But you don't need to try to cope alone with domestic violence. There are organisations and individuals that can offer support, advice and practical help.

If your anger is getting out of control and you are worried about the effects this is having on you, your partner and your family, you may find that counselling can help. You can ask your GP to refer you, or you can obtain a list of suitable professional counsellors in your area by sending a stamped self-addressed envelope to The British Association for Counselling, 1 Regent Place, Rugby CV21 2PJ.

The Women’s Aid National Domestic Violence Helpline is for women experiencing physical, emotional or sexual violence in the home. They provide advice, information and support. Callers can be referred to local refuges and emergency and temporary accommodation via their helpline on 0845 7023 468 (24 hours a day), or you can visit their website at www.womensaid.org.uk.

MALE is an organisation that supports men who are experiencing domestic violence. They can help with relationship violence, whether in a heterosexual relationship, a same-sex one, or even if the violence is from another person such as a child or a carer. Call 0208 644 9914 (Mondays and Wednesdays 9am-10pm).

Refuge provides counselling, support and welfare rights advice for women and children escaping domestic violence. They have a number of refuges around the UK. Call their helpline on 0870 599 5443 (open 24 hours a day).

Shelterline is a free, national housing helpline. They can provide emergency access to refuge services. Contact them on 0808 800 4444 (24 hours a day).

In an emergency, always call the Police by dialling 999. They will take all reports of domestic violence very seriously, and have specially trained and experienced officers on hand to help.

Relate provides a range of services, including counselling for individuals and couples. You will find their details in your local telephone directory.

If someone has been violent towards you in any way, you can call Victim Supportline in confidence on 0845 30 30 900 (Mondays to Fridays 9am-9pm, weekends 9am-7pm).

You can ask confidential questions online in the Just Ask section of the Channel 4 Health House at www.channel4.com/health.
