The highs and lows of co-mance (coalition romance)

It begins with the debates, as Nick Clegg proves he can hold his own on the debating platform, winning admiration from the nation and perhaps some respect from his boss-to-be.

Rose garden rendez-vous: the honeymoon kicks off in May 2010 in the garden at No. 10 with a joint press conference among the roses after the coalition is formed.

But the first stumbling block was not far away. In December, 2010 Nick Clegg reneged on his promise to oppose tuition fees, prompting protests, which were sometimes violent, across the country.

United against adversity: one thing the pair have been aligned on is measures to battle austerity, such as benefits cuts and budget reductions for the army, the police force and the NHS.

Little and large: however, the cuts face concerted opposition. including trade union protests in March 2011.

Clegg scorned: the biggest bust-up, and the end of the honeymoon period, comes with the row over electoral reform. A crushing defeat and the removal of the PM's support visibly angers his deputy.

Summer celebrations: despite increasing tensions between the pair, the 2012 summer celebrations kicked off - firstly with the Queen's Diamond jubilee...News

... and later at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

The summer recess does not mean all problems are solved, though. In a first for parliament, the PM and his deputy make separate statements over Leveson - with Mr Clegg siding with Ed Miliband.

Going forward the pair have to deal with the issue of same-sex marriage. Both support the move, (pictured addressing a Gay Pride reception on the issue) but face opposition from within the Conservativ

On stable ground? In January 2013, the leaders pledge a 'five-year commitment'.
