A former president, a supermodel and rock royalty were among the crowd for the opening of this much anticipated show.

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark is the most expensive Broadway production in history, costing roughly $70m (USD).

Despite the millions ploughed into the production, it has had more troubles than most: the show's opening has been postponed six times since previews began in November 2010, and five cast members have been injured during rehearsals.

The music for Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark was written by Bono and The Edge of U2.

Despite the well-publicised problems they were happy to finally have made it this far: "It's such an amazing feeling that we're actually going to get to see it on opening night," said The Edge.

"Normally, at an event like this, we're on the stage. We have to perform. But tonight we actually sit back with some popcorn and get to see the show."

Some say the pair's involvement has focused an even greater spotlight on the show's setbacks, but they believe they have looked past the frustrations.

"We learned the hard way about how difficult this stuff is. But this is a magical, magical night out. It's a night you will never forget in the theatre, and I can say that having, you know, having been a big critic of it and we were as tough on this thing as any of our critics and now we're sure we're through them," said Bono.

In March the show's original co-writer and director, Julie Taymor, was replaced as the production shut down for three weeks to be revamped after poor reviews. On the red carpet Taymor joined Bono and The Edge for pictures.

Numerous celebs made opening night as model Cindy Crawford and director Spike Lee came out with her children in tow. After the show, Crawford gave the production a rave review.

"When Spider-Man first appears, it's super exciting. We loved that," Crawford said.

And former US President Bill Clinton bypassed the red carpet in order to make it to his seat before the start of the show.
