Agony for Scots in last-gasp defeat to Argentina

Scotland are on the verge of exiting the Rugby World Cup after a dramatic 13-12 defeat to Argentina. Their last hope on staying in the tournament rests on them beating England next.

The Scots led the match in Wellington 12-6 with just eight minutes left, but a late converted try gave Argentina an incredible victory in their bid to reach the quarter finals of the Rugby World Cup.

The first half was close and cagey. Argentina caught Scotland offside with an early attack. Felipe Contepomi kicked the South Americans in front.

The Scots fought back with brute force earning two penalties. Chris Patterson and Rory Jackson glady booted their side in to a half time lead.

The second half was a scintillating struggle for world cup survival. A slip in the scrum gave Contepomi the chance to level the score. The Argentine veteran found the target to make it six all.

Scotland regained the lead less than two minutes later. The sure footed Jackson kicking a brilliant drop goal.

The Scots good fortune continued. Another Contepomi penalty, but this time the ball crashed against the post.

The Scots were on course for the quarter finals before a piece of supreme skill turned the match.

Andy Robinson’s men took full advantage. Scottish replacement Dan Parks extended his side’s lead to 12-6.

Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino danced through the Scottish defence to score a wonderful converted try that gave Argentina a one point lead.

The same man then gave the Scots a last chance to earn victory. Amorosino’s fumble meant possession in front of the posts.

The ball found its way back to Parks for a drop kick at goal but it fell onto his weaker foot and missed. Scotland’s chance had gone. Argentina celebrated a sensational victory. The final score Argentina 13 Scotland 12.

This result leaves Scotland on the brink of elimination, meaning they almost certainly need to beat England in their next game to have any chance of staying in the World Cup.
