#RefugeesWelcome: thousands march in London

Thousands march through central London to show solidarity with refugees caught up in the current crisis.

Protesters are marching to Parliament Square to show solidarity with refugees and protest against the government’s handling of the refugee crisis.

Organisers of the event expected thousands to take part, and the turnout appears to be huge.

The protest is backed by organisations including Amnesty International, the Syria Solidarity Movement and Stand Up To Racism.

Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International, said: “This is a critical moment ahead of the EU leaders meeting on Monday to make our voices heard loud and clear.”

She said: “We should remember the proud moments in the UK’s history when we have opened our doors to people when they are most in need, and we should not be turning our backs now on those caught up in what has become the biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War.”

Protests are taking place in other places in the UK, as well as in Europe.
