Take a seat: Britain’s first bus powered by poo

Britain’s first bus powered entirely by human and food waste goes into service between Bath and Bristol today.

The Bio-Bus, a 40-seater shuttle service between Bath and Bristol Airport, is fuelled by biomethane gas generated by the treatment of sewage and food waste at a processing plant in Bristol. It can travel up to 186 miles on just one tank of gas.

Scientists say the yearly waste generated from one bus load of passengers would provide enough power for a return trip from Cornwall’s Land’s End to the northeastern tip of Scotland, John O’Groats

Engineers believe Bio-Bus could provide a sustainable way of fuelling public transport while improving urban air quality. The gas produces fewer emissions than traditional diesel engines and is both renewable and sustainable.

It is generated at Bristol sewage treatment works which generates around 75 million cubic metres of sewage waste and 35,000 tonnes of food waste each year.
