Andy Murray avenges his Wimbledon final defeat by beating Roger Federer to win Olympic gold in the men’s singles tennis final, and scoops a silver in the mixed doubles alongside Laura Robson.

Exactly four weeks on from his defeat by the Swiss world number one in the Wimbledon final, Murray faced the same opponent at the same venue – but this time scooped the gold medal.

Neither man has been in this position before in the Olympic singles and although Federer is a 17-time grand slam champion, critics believed Murray was playing the better tennis.

The Scot posted a straight-sets victory over second seed Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, while an out-of-sorts Federer eventually beat Juan Martin del Potro 19-17 in the deciding set.

Andy Murray and Laura Robson had to settle for silver as they were beaten by Belarusian duo Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi in the Olympics mixed doubles final.

Murray and Robson lost 2-6 6-3 10-8 at Wimbledon.
