There are many ways that you can make a difference to global inequality, as an individual and with others. You can:
- Buy fair trade goods. Fair trade tea, coffee and chocolate are widely available. Check the section in your local supermarket. You can ask your workplace to buy fair trade products and write to your local councillors to demand that your council uses fair trade suppliers.
- Write to your MP to demand that the government meets the 0.7% target for development aid. Ask what steps the government is taking to ensure that the targets for eradicating poverty through the Millennium Development Goals are met.
- Keep yourself informed about global economic and social issues by subscribing to New Internationalist.
- Inform others by writing to the media about the effects of the current policies of richer countries towards poorer nations.
- Support campaigns such as the World Development Movement and the Trade Justice Campaign by signing petitions, volunteering, leafleting and donating money.
- Encourage your local school to build a partnership with a school in sub-Saharan Africa through the Link Schools Programme of Link Community Development.
