THE SONY IMPACT AWARD
In a year that has already witnessed dramatic world events from natural disasters, such as the devastating Tsunami to the continued battle against poverty in the developing world, the subject matter of this year’s entries was not dominated by any single event. What was common to every submission, however, was the cameraperson’s unique ability to treat the subject matter with compassion and insight and to magnificently capture human resilience in the face of often unimaginable hardships. All three finalists demonstrated beyond question a hunger to reveal the truth in securing footage that can help move people, governments and institutions towards positive change.

THE RORY PECK AWARD FOR HARD NEWS
The Hard News category honours those films which best capture the immediacy of news unfolding before them, sometimes involving the most extreme risk to the camera operator. Chris Shaw, Senior Programme Controller of Channel 5 and Chair of the Hard News Judging Panel said, "What we were looking for here was 'the instant', the feeling of 'got to get it now, got to get it back now'. Hard news developing before our eyes was crucial, if not the defining element." In their debate, the panel also acknowledged the growing contributions of those local self-taught cameramen who show great enterprise with little backup support.
Mehran Bozorgnia (Iranian)
Opium Trail
Shot: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Summer 2005
Self Funded, later supported by Channel 4 News Independents' Fund
Alexander Lomakin (Russian)
Beslan Seige

Geof Thorpe-Willett (British)

THE RORY PECK AWARD FOR FEATURES
The Features Award singles out camera operators who produce films with determination and stamina and whose storytelling approach is both original and versatile. Last year’s posthumous Features Award Winner was James Miller whose film 'Death in Gaza' recently won three Emmy’s. This year the panel’s debate focused in particular on independent enterprise and, with the increase of 'embedded' reports in recent years, the importance of pushing back the boundaries of what can be shot versus the creativity of the stories told.
Tomasz Glowacki (Polish)

Sean Paul Langan (British)
Mission Accomplished: Langan in Iraq
Shot: Iraq, April 2003-August 2004
