The Mark Thomas Product

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Mark Thomas Product.

There are six shows this series and the content of each is kept under wraps until broadcast, so we can’t tell you any more now.

But often broadcasting the story is the point that the real story starts. We find only part of the picture and all the other bits that complete it are still waiting to be unearthed. People may have information or background that adds to what we've found, or take it on into areas we've not thought of.

People like you.

What you can do

Remember there's lots of obscure means to find stuff out. A lot of it can start with checking some of the links on our "links" and "downloads" pages.

The Data Protection Act showed one useful way you could get data on themselves and a number of people have used it to good effect. Other shows in the series will look at shareholder rights and access that goes with it and fun with the Local Government Audit Act. A few years ago when we looked at access to heritage property under an inheritance tax scheme we discovered stately homes that you had the right to visit but never knew about. Shortly afterwards the law changed requiring owners to reveal themselves and make their opening arrangements known. Four years on nearly eighty properties now appear on the IR list of Conditionally Exempt Properties.

Why not spend this summer visiting a few to see what your taxes have helped pay for and preserve?

The show

Do we ever shoot things and not use it? Yes sometimes. Do we ever dream of things that never end up happening. Yes. On series one we hoped to stage a war poets reading complete with helicopters and thunder flashes in Jeffrey Archer's back garden but alas it ended up binned. Just like Jeffrey…

The symbols on the set may give a few hints to what's coming up and if you really want to study things carefully try and work out what the barcode on the backdrops says. It's different each week and you'll need to get hold of a good barcode reader to find out.

Before you ask, no there have never been any videos released of the series and no, there is no MTP merchandise to buy. If you want to buy something connected to The Product then watch the shows and figure out something suitable to give the tee shirt money to.

We try to be honest. Like Mark says in the trail, when it's good it's good and when it isn't, well… sorry, keep watching, hopefully you'll enjoy the next one.

If two hundred people can turn up to a pub in South London on a Sunday night and laugh and cheer a programme all about an obscure organophosphate then there is a corner of terrestrial television that is forever non-dumb.

If you watch it then even better.

If you watch it and then go out and buy the toothpaste and the beer and the car, then everyone will be happy.

So keep watching. No hints as to what you're going to see but there's plenty of new people to visit and things to see and there's just the chance that we might pay a visit to an old friend along the way…
