ART FOR ART’S SAKE The Spie Group’s headquarters are situated in a large corporate park, just outside Paris, with a corporate lake, a corporate bridge, corporate ducks and corporate Coi carp.We gave Spie a call and said hello, we are artists and we would like to come to your corporate headquarters and build some art. They said that would be lovely, what would you build? We said maybe an ice sculpture? They said great, will it be around for a while so that our employees can enjoy it? We said, oh yes.
So, last week, we turned up at Spie’s headquarters with a film crew, an articulated lorry, seven and a half tonnes of ice, five ice sculpters and a chain saw.
Our sculpture was about 6 feet high and 40 feet long, with a strange dam-like curve. Along the top was repeated the word “YUSUFELI”. When it was finished, Mark got Spie’s Communications Director to come along for an impromptu unveiling ceremony.
Spie were not amused. They did not think that our art was an appropriate gift. We were confused. Surely you should be proud of your projects? Why this reaction? We haven’t said anything bad about Yusufeli, we’ve just written it on our sculpture. Have we got it wrong again? Wait here, said the Communications Director, I’ll go and speak to the directors, give me 5 minutes. OK, said Mark... ..And then we legged it. Leaving seven and a half tonnes of ice next to their corporate lake, representing a dam they are going to build. In the van, Mark turned to our ice sculpture and asked how long it would take to melt.
