Jane Moore
SIZE ZERO - WHO'S TO BLAME

Jane Moore once believed that the media played no part in influencing young women about their body image.

Jane has been forced to re-evaluate her opinion after seeing the effects on her teenage daughter Ellie and her friends and their desire for the unhealthily skinny 'ideal'.

Jane and 14-year-old Ellie show how current fashion and media images of so-called perfection have warped women's body image.

London Fashion Week begins on 12 February and while the average catwalk model will be around 15% underweight, the average British woman has become bigger.

Leading experts believe the resulting disparity between the body 'ideal' and the average body reality has spawned a rise in eating disorders and negative body image. Using 3D body-mapping technology, even slim teenager Ellie estimates her size 8 body to be 18% fatter than the reality.

But while many say change needs to come from the fashion industry and media, Jane argues that women themselves hold the key and that by only by rejecting the so-called 'perfection' we're drip-fed on a daily basis can we make ourselves and our daughters truly happy with our normal (and healthy) bodies.

Bring Back the Orphanage

Author Phil Frampton was raised in a Barnado's Children's Home, and believes that the home gave him the stability to make a better start in life than the fostering system achieves for most children in its care today. With a shortage of 8,000 foster carers, too many children in foster care are frequently moved from pillar to post around the system, with each move invariably damaging the child emotionally and educationally.
